Which type of caravanner are you?

Reading through the various experiences of some Caravan Club members during 'lemming day' when they are forced to join a mad internet scramble to book the holidays that they want it crossed my mind that there are distinct differences between two types of caravanners.

It would appear that many CC members seem to want to stay regularly at the same places every year which gives rise to this lemming-like behaviour. I'm not even a member of the CC but even I know that a full week at the paradise on earth that is Chatsworth CC site really seems to be the ultimate prize in the lemming lottery
smiley-laughing.gif

Nothing wrong with a site being popular but what I wonder is this. Do some caravanners prefer to go to exactly the same site year in, year out? There are scores of sites, admittedly of variable quality in and around the Peak District but the only sites in that area that I ever seem to read about on forums are Chatsworth or Grin Low.
Is there some sort of homing pigeon mentality going on with some CC sites? I can understand some members wanting to make the most of their membership fee and to know that the toilets and showers are going to be of a high standard but they seem to be reluctant to try anything other than what they already know.
The second type of caravanners appear to be a bit more adventurous, they rarely visit the same place twice and are always looking for the next site to try. They will accept slightly lower standards up to a point in exchange for a different or unusual location and many of these types often use CL's or CS's. which can be less expensive and with fewer rules and regulations. Their caravans are tourers in the truest sense of the word, they go all over the country and accept the rough with the smooth.
So there we have it, two types of caravanners. The 'Timid Tim' or the 'Adventurous Andy '

Definately the Adventurous Andys!

We rarely use the same sites more than twice, I personally can't see the point in having a touring caravan if you're going to the same place each year - you may as well go static! When we take our main holiday, 3-4 weeks, we never stay in one place more than 5 or 6
nights, (I get bored very easily LOL) so we class ourselves as quite nomadic!

Parksy, I suppose we are a mixture of the two!!!e
For main holidays we always look for somewhere we have never been to, area and site if we return to a specific part of our beautiful and picturesque counrty.
However, if we decide we have had enough and want a quick and easy weekend away we will sometimes return to a site we have previously visited. As we are very close to the Peak District, I know the area quite well and in my opinion one of the best sites around is Laneside Caravan Park at Hope. It is spotlessly clean, reasonable prices and about 45 minutes away with the van in tow! It is a great base for the Peak Disrict and very close to the caverns in Castleton, and if you are like me and like real ale there are some great pubs, and more great pubs and erm......... some more great pubs. Oh, it is great for walkers too.
I would recommenend it to anybody.....................chris

Chatsworth is a nice site, but i have started using CLS. They are cheaper, quieter but often a little out of the way.

I have had to use CL's since i can not get on to any decent CC sites,. Last night i did manage to book for Grin Low in May for 3 nights , but the price left me reeling-£90.0 , so i did not bother.

I am local to Chatsworth but for 3 years running am unable to get a pitch. I would love to go, but it seems those of us who can afford not to work or are retired spend all day booking it up. And if you are retired.... go during the blummin week.

I’ve been a CC member for some years but have never stayed on a CC site. Having visited friends on one it reminded me of a housing estate. All the vans neatly lined up facing the same way, awnings to one side, cars to the other. Give me a CL any day, much more relaxed. Our main break on the continent is on an “a la ferme” site, or at least the smallest site I can find in our chosen area, which is different every trip. In the UK I have never returned to any site/CL. By opting for different sites you see so much more of our country and never get bored.

We do both.
Sometimes we pitch on one site for two or three weeks eg Cornwall. It is easier to erect the awning just once and then tour around. Cornwall is quite small.
If it's Scotland then we hitch and pitch every 4-5 days, either porch awning or none at all.
The beauty of a touring caravan is the flexibility to choose as and when you go unless of course you want one of the CC sites that seem to get fully booked immediately the booking system opens.
All round touring is amust to fully enjoy all the seasons. If I only toured in the summer sun I'd live in Spain

We did have 2 or 3 favourite sites (couple of CC sites, 1 private one) that we visited quite often. Other than that though, we'd (that's the Royal we, obviously
smiley-wink.gif
) just pick the area we wanted to go, and look for a suitable site nearby. More often than not it would be a CC site (just because we like them!), but weren't averse to using a private site providing it looked OK and had good reviews. Last year we'd just started using CLs too - one we used in Somerset was really nice, another in Norfolk we probably wouldn't use again (the toilet and shower were none too clean
smiley-yell.gif
and so horrendously cobwebby that OH had to go in ahead of me and make sure it was safe first!
smiley-surprised.gif
).
Our van was a large T/A with a fixed bed, chosen specifically for the amount of living and bedroom space and large kitchen, but this obviously meant a compromise with the bathroom. Although fully equipped with loo, sink & shower, it was a tiny all-in-one wet room - virtually impossible to have a shower without banging various sticky-out bits of your anatomy, and drenching the entire room! Thus, we always used sites with full facilities.

We use all kinds of sites from CC to C&CC, CL's etc , depends where we are and what we need.
There are some really good, if basic, sites around which suffice most of the time, but if spending more than a few days at one place, then it has to have showers etc.

We're in the CC but have only used maybe two or three CC sites. We do use CL's and private sites. We're quite happy on a small CL with facilities. I always search for a review of the site I'm interested in, and also do a street view google search.

Sorry Phil but as I posted before, I dont intend going home each Thursday only to set of again on the Sunday, probably over the same road, at my own cost, just to please those who just book weekends. Because I'm retired is exactly the reason I need to be careful with the pennies because my pension doesn't stretch to subsidising those who work

Now then Phil my boy
I worked bloody hard for 40 years, struggled as a young man bringing up kids and dogs making do with very basic cars , tents and caravans for our precious 3 weeks annual leave. I paid considerable income tax and national insurance to pay for the less well off, the pensioners and of course the scroungers.
So please as it is Christmas and I am a very decent dog will you kindly withdraw the statement in red. It could be you one day that you are insulting.

My bookings so far for 2011.

1 week ....Cotswolds CL

2 weeks.... Cornwall Private
1 week .... Devon CL

1 week .... Cumbria CC
1 week .... Yorkshire Dales CC
1 week .... Cheshire C&CC
1 week .... Snowdonia C&CC

1 week .... Lincs CC
1 week .... Notts CS
1 week .... Lancs CC

Of the above sites I've already been to 3 of them before which means 8 new sites. The only site among them that some rave about, apart from myself with Englethwaite Hall, is Bolton Abbey. The CLs/CSs I've looked at either from their web sites, Google maps, campsite reviews, the Armcher CL DVDs or a combination of either.
Of the 11 weeks booked there are only two days that come within school holidays or a bank holiday. That doesn't mean we wont go away then but will book some adult CLs to fill in the gaps.

From the above I would say that I'm a Wandering Windy

Bit of each - have never stayed on any site longer than 5 nights, normally only book at one site (CC Black Horse Farm Folkestone) so that we are sure of somewhere to stay before catching the morning ferry, and when we get off the ferry we don't even know whether we are heading to Austria or Denmark!
We bought a porch awning which has now travelled about 15,000 miles, but has only been put up about 4 times as no point putting it up if the weather is dry, and I don't want to store it if the weather is wet.
Our shower is carpeted and has never been used as it would be such a pain and there is normally a decent shower block a short walk away.
Have used some CLs in the UK, but mainly those which have a shower (even if it is a bit rough).
Chaque un a son gout as the French say..........

Never stayed or visited the same site twice (except one and it was awful the 2nd time)
Not a member of any of the clubs so most are medium size private sites.
Have been on some really good ones and some not so good but the majority I would visit again if we had no other choices,
but the UK is a big place. Never been abroad (Scares me to death just the thought of it)
But, am looking at a bigger commercial site this year JUST for the grandson you understand

Happy Caravanning folks.

Definitely adventurous - we set off for Europe twice a year, with only the vaguest idea where we might be going, no campsite bookings made, except the ferry, and just head in the direction of the best weather, until we reach some sunshine, then start looking for a site. We have been known to be heading 'towards' Italy, but ended up in Spain! Generally these days we stick with France, but nothing is set in stone and we've meandered around Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Andorra and Spain in the past.
We do go well prepared with plenty of site guides and I contribute to the Abroad section on here and many other caravan forums, so I have any idea of what is out there - but often we have no real idea what a site is like until we get there.
Believe me we've found some absolute gems along the way - and only ever one site where we really wouldn't go back. We find overnight stops, en-route, never in advance, and our 'end' destination is never fixed - until we find it and stay there!
Our first ever trip abroad with the caravan was in 1993 - although we'd camped in France since 1980. Our planning involved buying a large map, a campsite guide, and highlighting the campsites along our planned 'first-day' route so we could find the next site wherever we were at whatever time we decided to stop. We then made our minds up where we would go the next day once we'd set up the van - and ended up doing a round trip via Burgundy (two sites), the Gard region of southern France (one site), Carcassonne (one site), the Dordogne (one site) and Calais - staying just a few days at each site. We had children with us in those days, and we all had a great time. We've been back twice a year with the caravan ever since.
Caravanning in Europe brings back the proper meaning of a 'Touring' caravan - you can still tour, going where you please, staying as long or as little as you like, and being as adventurous as you want.
We do use the van in Britain - and the last time we booked (well in advance) our booking was cancelled by the site because of the extremely bad weather! Another time was at a site mentioned by Lisa, where the wind and the sloping site were frightening (views to die for but not literally!!!!!) - and we saw a van blown off pitch and down the site into a Range Rover! The toilets were horrible, too, so generally when we caravan in this country something puts us off! As a result, we do tend to go back to those sites we know are Ok - Rivendale in Derbyshire, the Quiet Site at Ullswater, Baltic Wharf in Bristol, the Caravan Club site at Knaresborough and a couple of sites at Abersoch are all in our 'favourites' box.

I'm a member of both clubs but tend to avoid many of the CC sites as I dislike the sterile pitches and closely mown grass with all the 'vans perfectly lined up like they are on parade. Informal sites with plenty of wildlife are what I look for. With the foregoing in mind I then try to adjust my stays to fall in with any special offers the clubs are offering such as cheap mid week, 7 for 5 etc. I tend to avoid most of the commercial sites as being a solo 'vanner I resent paying the same as an extended family. During the summer months I frequently do not use EHU and if I stay anywhere for a week or more I simply take my solar panel to keep the battery charged up.

If we all wanted the same things from sites it would be a boring existence and I hope that the clubs realise this when designing any new sites or remodelling existing ones.

As far as I am aware no one is forced to join the lemming type behaviour and the subsequent moan and groan that follows when they cannot get on their favourite site. My heart goes out to these poor downtrodden people and bleeds custard and peanuts!

My kids call me the "I've been everywhere man"( old song) as I've always been a serial traveller. We try not to repeat visits to sites. We tend to hear from somebody or about something happening and head off to the a site nearby.. It could be a golf tournament, cycle race(le Tour), racing, music festival or just chasing the sun or heading for a nice scene we've seen in a magazine or on the TV.
The odd times we've wanted to get on a CC site for couple of weeks they were booked out months ago, we don't bother any more.

we are members of both as we like looking at new parts of the country and it gives us a choice of CL's and CS's but going to the same site each time seems a bit of a waste.Having said that we have been to the same site in France a rally in holland a couple of times but still look for new things to do each time.Pristine toilets and showers are low on our list
