Wiring in a solar panel

Hi,I'm a newbie to the site so please bear with me if I haven't followed the correct procedures. I've looked at many posts but none seem to answer my two questions, I'm sure the answer is out there but I've not found it.I'm fitting a solar panel to the roof of my 2004 van and will be hard wiring it. Does the panel need to be kept covered whist fitting it ie. not charging, and can the battery be removed for security when the panel is open to the sun. (on a car if you disconnect the battery with the engine is running you can blow the alternator)Finally, on the charge controller there is a pair of connections marked LOAD. As I'm using the battery as the centre of the power system, do I need to connect up these connections and if so, to what?CheersPeter

Hi Nelson
I'd recommend fitting a fuse between the solar panel and the charge controller and yes, cover the solar panel when you are connecting it up to avoid an accidental short circuit which could damage your panel.
Removing the battery seems to me to be defeating the object of fitting the panel in the first place, but if you must remove it either cover the panel or remove the fuse that you fitted.
The 'load' connections on your charge controller don't have to be connected to anything unless you wanted to connect an ammeter or a light to run directly off the panel.
