Yuk - Leaking Thetford Toilet

Hi Everyone,

I have a year 2000 Abbey GTS 216 but a problem has occured recently. Everytime I come to remove the waste holding tank from the toilet there is quite a lot of 'waste' sitting in the dip below the handle on top of the cassette which makes quite a mess (of me) when I remove it from the outside of the caravan. The holding tank is not overflowing as I have removed it when it is less than half full and the same thing happens. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,
Steve

1. Do you have children who don't 'flush' after they use the toilet, leaving something in the bowl, which when you remove the cassette moves and drops into the compartment where it shouldn't? Awful question, but this happened to us once when my nephew had used the loo last!
2. Perhaps you've got a leaky bowl seal or 'blade' - these do need replacing every so often, and your van is now a few years old.
3. There is a 'vent' button on the top of the toilet which may have 'popped up' and will need re-setting.
You can look at the Thetford website for 'how to do it' - step by step instructions for replacing the seal, replacing the vent button, replacing the blade, etc.

Hi Val,

Thanks for quick reply, I will look to replace the bowl seal and blade, I have replaced the seal at the top of the waste holding tank were the blade closes against when I bought the caravan approximately 5 years ago. I will also look into re-setting the vent button.

We don't have children so I can elliminate the first possible cause, I thought at first it might be that the blade was being closed before the flush water had been allowed to drain down into the holding tank (this was whilst I still wanted to believe that I had just got covered in flush water) but I have opened and closed the blade before removing the waste holding tank to elliminate this as a possible cause.

Thanks again for the quick and informative reply,

Kind regards,
Steve
