Thanks. Only worrying thing is the word "normally". ;) Therefore, if i put a multi-meter on the brown and white wire and on the earth I should get 12v. And if i put on the brown green wire I should get 0v.

Thanks for the response. I had to remove the wires as they were threaded throgh the card casing and I needed to peel it back t get to the element. Removing 2 wires from a connector block is not the problem it's loosing the piece of paper teling me which goes to which, I know I'm a numpty...
