    Dometic fridge 12v supply puzzle

The BS7671:2008 known as 17th Edition wiring regulations decided for some reason to include the 12 volt wiring to a caravan, one of the things they stated was the supply to charge the battery and the supply to work the fridge need to be independent, however the caravan only has two supplies one...

    Radio battery backup

Having to retune when you get to site is not a problem, However having the ratio running in demo mode until you can get into caravan to turn it off is a problem. And with the radio I fitted if it looses and regains power it auto switches on in demo mode, so the radio is playing all the time you...

    Radio battery backup

I have considered a 9 volt battery, diodes etc. However I in the end simply swapped the radio supply at the fuse box so it is supplied all the time, even with master off.

Charging a battery using the caravan socket

Yes in real terms it's the alternator that pushes 80A into the slave/domestic battery. With a narrow boat the regulator may be changed for a stage charging regulator on the second alternator or a alternator to battery inverter used so on start up three 160 Ah batteries used for domestic supply...

Charging a battery using the caravan socket

The 150 amp you talk about is not battery to battery but batteries to starter motor. So battery to battery max voltage is around 12.8 and min 11.8 so one volt connect the two together maybe 10 amp for a few seconds but then down to around 1 amp or less. As donor battery voltage quickly drops and...

    Anglesey sites

I took our caravan for daughter to Caravan and camping club approved site last junction off A55 before Holyhead, then right off the A5 through a lovely little village and it was on right hand side, hard standings near the house, but daughter wanted no children site so we used the field, it was a...

    Watts v amps?

Technically watts = Volt x Amps x Power factor correction and with a heater the power factor is 1 so for real life we can consider that VA = Watts. Now our systems are normally limited by miniature circuit breakers (MCB) which is two devices in one, so a B16 MCB will trip at between 3 and 5...

Do you *have* to have a leisure battery fitted?

Three types of power supply. 1) Simple transformer and rectifier switches off on 100 times a minute, should not be left connected for extended time or used without a battery. 2) Switch mode power supply again can have no smoothing between off and on, and often monitors battery voltage...

    Split charge relay question

I love riding my bike on the canal tow path, and my son did at one time live in a narrow boat, even when waiting for the lock to fill or drain, I have never heard the narrow boat engine stop as with a car when at traffic lights, I will listen more carefully now, But I would be nervous letting...

    Split charge relay question

Years ago split charging was enough to keep on going if you moved every other day using a relay or diode, however the power we use today it may stretch the battery life a bit, but does not really put enough in the battery to be much good, having the fridge work, or the anti-snake yes, but if you...

    Motor mover is mandatory!

I can see with children how having the site car free would be an advantage, but for me keeping the site children free would be better. In the early days we would use the cars battery for the caravan, and so we always wanted the car close, I am lazy so with my Gowing (Renault Kangoo) I would...

    Measuring noseweights

Tow ball weight is approximate, there are too many variables, use a standard friction pad and spring anti snake and spring assister and tow ball weight is decreased but no measuring device normally used will measure it. Using a set of bathroom scales we would normally place the jockey wheel on...

    Steep drive and winch?

I have a neighbour who parks directly opposite my drive, it seems I can call the police if I can't get out, but not when hard to get out. Getting in then the option is park on the road until there is access, and it is the county council bin wagons who have the real problem, having to reverse...

    Steep drive and winch?

I thought a Pub car park was private land so noting to do with the Police, however it has nothing to do with who owns the land but who has assess, so when a friend asked the Publican if he could leave the car, she asked would he put it in corner of car park which he did, locked it up and was...
