    RN85 from Gap to Grenoble

Peter, The RN85 "Route Napoleon" is is a scenically stunning route, and certainly passable with a caravan in tow. I did the journey from Cannes to Grenoble a couple of years ago towing the 'van and it's definitely one of the most memorable trips I've ever done. As the route winds over the...

    Mercedes ML 270 cdi auto

Sue, We have an ML270 CDI auto bought from new in 2003. Something similar happened when my wife was driving solo, fortunately she was going very slowly. After switching off the ignition and re-starting the engine all was normal. Our local Merc dealer in Cambridge diagnosed a faulty engine...

    Digital Terrestrial TV in France

Has anyone tried using a UK Freeview set top box to receive digital terrestrial TV in France? My caravan is equipped with a Status 530 directional aerial and my TV set is PAL analogue - I'm wondering if a Freeview box would allow me to pick up any French DTV channels (principally to see 'meteo'...

    kloofs near bexhill sussex

We stayed there in October last year, booked for three nights but stayed only one. The sight of lots of old banger caravans parked on the way in wasn't an auspicious start. We were allocated a hardstanding pitch which looked out onto the storage compound at the front and some ugly Leylandii...

Port de Limounal (Dordogne) & La Foret (SW Atlantic Coast)

Jerry, Do you mean "Le Port de Limieul" campsite in the Dordogne? If so, then I can thoroughly recommend it. Stayed there for 9 days in Aug/Sep, managed to get a pitch with views directly onto the Dordogne river. Pitches are generally spacious, mostly shaded; the two sanitaires are adequate...

    Fleetwood Heritage, Buccaneer caravans

Hi Di & Gerry, Thanks for your response and commiserations on the problems you've had with the Fleetwood. I went and had a second look at the Fleetwood Heritage 560-4 (2006 model) and came away with my enthusiasm dented...trim peeling off the rear panel, limited access to storage space under...

    Fleetwood Heritage, Buccaneer caravans

I am thinking of changing my 2003 Hymer Nova 545 for a UK caravan, mainly because my wife and I find the lounge in the Hymer somewhat uncomfortable if sitting inside on a rainy day for long periods. The main criteria for purchase are (a) build quality (b) L-shaped lounge (c) fixed bed (d)...

So what do you do for a living

I'm a project manager for a company that does electronics and software development for the automotive industry. My wife is a nurse. Been caravanning for just over 2 years, wish we'd started sooner.

    Squealing sound when towing

Just to draw this thread to a conclusion... I took the van back to the dealer last Friday. As I set out on the journey, it was clear that the noise had disappeared, and there was no evidence of it on the way. At the dealer's I described the problem to the workshop technician who asked if I...

    Squealing sound when towing

Royston, thanks for your suggestion. I will put this to the dealer.

    Squealing sound when towing

No, it's not a clutch problem, the noise is coming from the 'van. I suspect it's to do with the brake shoes/drums as Lutz and Big Roy suggest. The dealer will investigate in a couple of weeks time.

    Mercedes ML anyone??

Mike, This is a great towcar. I have owned an ML270 CDI for 2 years from new and it has been 100% reliable. It tows my caravan which is around 1500kg laden weight with what I would call "authority" - the outfit is reassuringly stable at speed (I tend to do up to 60 - 65 mph) and I can...
