Has anyone had transmission problems with this car ? Whilst towing a van of 1500kg, the rev counters goes to max. and all power/ gears are lost. Stopping and switching off the engine solves the problem, not advised in the middle of a motorway !

Merc diagnostics are failing to find anything. The fault is intermittent and has happened at 10 mph on the flat, up a hill, cruising at 60 mph etc. A friend has had it happen with 5 people in the car and NOT towing.

We have an ML270 CDI auto bought from new in 2003. Something similar happened when my wife was driving solo, fortunately she was going very slowly. After switching off the ignition and re-starting the engine all was normal. Our local Merc dealer in Cambridge diagnosed a faulty engine ECU, which was replaced under warranty. The vehicle was about 2 years old at the time; the problem has not occurred since.
