I live near Penrith and use the A66 everytime I travel South. It is 80% dual and if there is a problem, you would be directed to the A69. But don't worry, its a very pleasant drive.

If you are running a car with xenon headlights, just check in your handbook for a lever which alters their setting for continental use. My last two cars have had this.
