troutbeck head cc site, penrith, cumbria

Ian, it's about one mile to the Troutbeck Inn at the junction with the A66. The site is wonderful with fabulous views of Blencathra. We did find midges a slight problem in June but not serious.

    Dundee to Fort William

The A86 from Newtonmore/Dalwhinnie is OK for towing. The A889 from Dalwhinnie WAS supposed to be the most dangerous road in Britain a few years ago but I couldn't get my head round how that could possibly be the case. I don't believe there were any fatalities on it. Very smooth surface with...

    Awning for Swift Corniche

If the ground-to-ground is 834cm, then an 850 awning will be perfect. It must be very rare to buy an awning of the exact size required and, in my opinion, it's preferable to be slightly larger as it's easier to "lose" the extra by pegging a bit wider at the 'van.

    Cycle Rack

I agree that, in theory, mounting bikes on the rear wall of a caravan is not a good idea but I transported two mountain bikes this way for about eight years with no problems. I only stopped doing so when the fitment for the rear window changed and the brackets for the bike rack could no longer...

    M 270 or Disco td5.

I have towed with both. The Disco was manual - auto Discos tend to "hunt" between gears - and the ML is auto. Both towed equally well but the ML is very much smoother because, with the auto 'box, it is pulling all the time. I used to find the Disco bogged down when changing from first to...

    Awning on hard pitch

Are you sure the hard standing will be concrete? It is more likely to be gravel or possibly concrete blocks with grass growing through. There is no way you will be able to put an awning up on genuine concrete!

    Reich Motor Movers

Paul, I was very interested in the Reich but my family-owned caravan dealership, where I have always had good advice, said they have had to weld a number of them. I was also interested in the Powrtouch, because of the 5 year warranty, but I have seen a number that were quite rusty so I have...

    Swivel taps

It cannot be correct that you have to loosen the fixing collar to swivel the tap out of the way to lower the sink cover. Something must be jamming the tap to prevent it swivelling. Perhaps removing the whole tap from the sink unit will highlight the problem. If it still doesn't swivel, a new...

    Highlands

May is the best time to avoid the midge in Scotland with a good chance of reasonable weather. We have taken a hillwalking holiday during the first week in May (sans caravan) for about 26 years and weather generally decent with NO midges.

    New Caravan Quality

We are now on our third Bailey, all purchased new. First was a 2-berth Pageant Cabriolet, then a 2-berth Pageant Magenta and now a 4-berth Senator Oklahoma with fixed bed collected last November. It is wonderfull but maybe a bit heavy for your average car. We tow with a 4*4 as we often go to...
