I've just read that the suspected thief who stole a womans MG car as she de-iced it and killed her as he ran in to her has been arrested.

The report says that the car was stolen outside her and her partners ∂£85000 home.

Nearly every press story be it a sad one like this poor woman or a crooked MP or a local neighbourhood hero has a value put on their home. Why?

What has the value of a persons home or where they live got to with many of these 'news' stories?

A house in one area may cost twice as much as an identical one in another, what is the price supposed to tell us and how is it relevant?

It's the Newspapers trying to provoke a sense of envy for some, and a put you down for others. The sooner we get rid of this cr*p the better for everyone.

I heard about this and it's terrible.

In answer to your question, I think it's to feed people's envy. Same as some people, when threads are posted on fourms, always like to quote that they have a 'friend' who is a 'consultant' for instance, not for them, having a cleaner who works in a hospital for instance. Or, when the average person on the street quotes something a police officer has said, some people then quote that they know the chief of police etc and then go on to give their version of what the chief of police had to say about an incident.

Money doesn't talk for me and I can't for the life of me think why people like to boast. But as with the article to which you refer, it's something we are hearing more and more. The media will quote 'lived on an estate' or 'lived in a leafy suburb'.

I actually know a lady who is now a hospital orderly at a local hospital but she was famous as a head teacher.

Same caring person.

Where she lives or if she owns a propert of X value tells us what?

"Envy"

Strange idea, if that is the journalistic reasoning.

I also hate name droppers and agree with Sadie, what on earth has the price of ones house got to do with the theft of a car. I was only talking on this same subject today to my friend Michael whilst in the bar of the House having drinky poo's.

He told me that just because his pile is a stately home and because his name is Baron Heseltine of Thenford, in the County of Northamptonshire it shouldn't have any bearing on the fact that his Porche got stolen. Rupee agreed with us. Oh, Rupee is our pet name for Michaels son, Rupert. He now runs the Haymarket publishing group.

My advice is to ignore name droppers, they are only out to impress.

The media has to put people in the boxes. - Single parent in social housing, affluent business person who lived in a leafy suburb. The media love to label people.

I know nothing of this poor woman but some people are easily swayed with financial figures and like it or not, it has an effect on people's opinions. That's one of the reasons why I never buy newspapers.

exactly lordy, name droppers are sad, i remember the duke of westminster telling me those exact words one night down in salsbury plains when him and i got bogged down in our vehicles.

i went back home after the exercise and duly told the duke of roxburgh what westy had told me.

I feel sorry for the family of the poor lady who was killed and sincerely hope that when the murderer is convicted more than the usual bleeding heart slap on the wrist will be meted out.

Another reason why house prices are sometimes quoted might just be to alert everyone to the fact that you don't have to be in a run down inner city area or a local authority sink estate to become a victim of crime. It can and all too often does happen everywhere.

Agree Parksy and thoughts must be given to her partner who has to bring up their child alone now.

I would put money on it that they won't go to court charged with murder, they will get the lesser charge of manslaughter and will be out within 6 years, probably less for good behaviour and plea bargaining, another sick law to reduce the prison population.

The previous owner of my car was murdered. The ring leader was found guilty of murder with a recommendation of serving 17 years and his lawyer is appealing against that term saying it's disproportionate. The sad case of that was this thug was on remand the day before for assaulting a policeman and had only just been let out. Now a widow is left with three children.

Isn't it ironic that in the last few days there have been two instances of mothers murdering their children, one stabbing her daughter 52 times. So sad.
