12 o'clock rule

Staying at a CC site last weekend I considered the plight of all the weekenders grabbing a couple of nights to escape the routine of work. Yes you might have guessed it but I don't do the latter anymore !

The site we were staying on was virtually full to capacity. The 12 o'clock exit rule was being enforced. The family on the next pitch decided they wanted to stay beyond the 12 o'clock deadline and were told they could do so for an additional payment of £10. The fee is the only way of discouraging people from staying and making room for new arrivals. They paid the required fee and duly left at about 7.00pm.

My point is this. As we all know, leaving work Friday pm to arrive on site Friday evening only to have to leave by midday Sunday is a bit of a hurried affair and, at todays prices seems an expensive weekend for basically one days leisure.

My suggestion is this. For Sundays only how about a 4.00pm or 5.00pm rule ?

No arrivals before obviously. This would mean weekenders getting much better value for money. People staying on site would not be affected and those moving on to another would be aware that there was no need to rush.

What's the downside ?

A rush of arrivals all after normal hours.

What about when it gets dark early ?

Wardens having to work later on Sunday evenings.

Possibility of less people planning to move/arrive on a Sunday leaving unoccupied pitches.

And the upside ?

Undoubtedly better value for weekenders.

Wardens can be compensated either financially or time off/ later opening times in the office.

Possibly higher occupancy on Friday and Saturdays nights as weekenders perceive better value

Or just maybe weekenders should make sure they choose lower occupancy sites in the first place. Then the 12 o'clock rule won't be enforced

Very sensible suggestion Rioja and Martin J I'd say.

Maybe a limited number of Sunday late leaving pitches in order that both late leavers and midday arrivers are catered for.

It would complicate booking a bit I suppose and sites would need an arrivals area for people waiting for 17:00.

Gets my vote.

Weekenders are quite entitled to stay longer on site for a small fee! That is, of course, if the site is not pre-fully booked. I am sure the Caravan Club has gone into this particular problem at great detail and find that, to support all its members, it has to have a 'removal' time on all their sites. Why don't weekenders ask the warden(s) if it is possible to relocate their vans off pitch but still on site so they can have the extra hours stay. This way everyone can be catered for.

I fully agree that 'weekenders' sometimes find it difficult to get away for the weekend when we are supposed to leave Sunday midday. As a resident of cornwall (still sunny at 9pm tonight) we try to get away most weekends if possible and would appreciate the opportunity to if necessary pull the van off the pitch in the morning and put it somewhere on the site so that we could stay on longer. With children at school we rarely get on site until after 5pm so leaving at 12 on Sunday would be pointless.

We were at a CC site last weekend and were allowed to stay later, on the Sunday, the site was quite quiet mind but we did appreciate it and would go back there again.

I appreciate that peak season this wouldn't always be possible.

Weather forcast stitched me up, I'm in South Devon where we were also forcast cloud and rain today, Sat and Sun so we decided not to go away.

It was so bad today, I fell asleep in the sun at lunch time and it was still warm and sunny at 8pm, not a cloud all afternoon.

Maybe we'll get to Godrevy or St Agnes on Sun for a few days.

Which CC site have you used recently?

I normally try and arrive on a site on Sunday - easier driving with less lorries, and no trouble with Saturday being booked.

If this suggestion went through, would I get a discount on the Sunday as I am only getting part of a day?

All rules have a purpose but surely there is scope for some elbowroom. If it is reasonably certain that enough pitches will be available for possible new arrivals on a Sunday without forcing late departures to vacate, I don't see what the problem is and I don't see why they should be asked to pay a fee for staying a bit longer, either. On the other hand, during peak season, when the site is always fully booked, I can understand why the rule needs to be rigidly enforced.

We've stayed on Hayle towans before, but not at the CC site, 'Beachside' was ok although a bit dated, but with great access to the beach.

We've managed to book into CC site at Baltic wharf in the centre of Bristol, seemed a better option with the weather looking so poor. Opportunity to see some relatives and wander around the Bristol Waterfront and city centre. Change is as good as a rest, we usually do the coastal thing.

Have a good one if you go St Agnes, the Pics of the site look good and there seems to be plenty of availability.

Hi

It all depends on the site, of course.

We spent a weekend at Searles' site in Hunstanton and the departure time is 5pm which means that you pretty much get two full days on site.

I think this should be a feature of each and every site - though it does mess things up for people who want to arrive on a Sunday!

Hi Rioja

While I completely agree with you about weekenders wanting a full weekend I have always felt that a day should be a full day,as most sites print a receipt when you book in on arrival showing an arrival time, then the departure time should be the same time on a day of departure. Advantages for the wardens, staggered arrivals and staggered departures.Easy to check who should be going each day and at what time.
