I am trying to run both a 240v and 12v system in my German Caravan. At the moment I have a 12V transformer for running a few 12V devices but have to rely on an external 240v source.

I am thinking of purchasing a 12V battery for the caravan so I can run these devices when I don't have any 240V and then charging the battery when I'm not using it. I have thought of a few ways of doing this however am looking for some advice.

My first thought was to have a manual switching system where I can switch between the 12V transformer and the 12V battery. E.g. When i'm at a site with 240V electricity I can just run the transformer. When there is no 240V I can switch to the battery source. My second thought was to see if I can get a device to do this automatically.

If anyone has any comments or any suggestions how I can go about doing this please feel free to respond

Lorraine,

Have a look here: http://www.thecaravanownersclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1124

Follow the links to the pictures and explanations, and read all the information.

It is a relatively easy thing to do if you have 12v experience or know someone who does and can help you.

The other suggestion from me is to contact the manufacturer. Most German caravan makers also supply to the UK market where a battery set up is standard, and so would be able to advise, or even supply the appropriate parts. My opinion is then you n have basically something that is approved at 'source' and keeps the value of your van at peak level.

My own van is German made, but for the UK market and has all the necesasary bits and pieces for a battery hook up. The transformer is actually Dutch sourced but to EU standards.

SL, I think you will find that the 240/12v unit is actually made by Dometic, and when the go wrong they are around

It may be, I have not actually looked at the maker's plate, although the Dometic web page does not show anything that looks like then one I have, and it is only 3 years old.

However, I do not see the point you are trying to make. Yes, one can always do a cheap and cheerful set up, but if when you come to sell the van it reduces the price, then I fail to see the advantage. If there is one thing i have learned is that new purchasers do not look favourably on DIY additions. If you are not planning to ever sell, then of course it does not matter.

To me, if
