Further to our electrical problems on the new van, DH has rewired the sockets on his car - he had to saw the bolts off they were so corroded. All the correct wires are there and fit beautifully into their new home - apart from a spare grey one. He can't get into the old unit to see where it came from because it's so knackered! Any ideas where this little wire belongs?

Cheers!

Amanda,

It's a spare wire. The only colours used are (pins 1 to 7) yellow, blue, white, green, brown, red & black.

You can tuck it back out of the way or cut it off.

Regards,

Ron

Have a look here for nice coloured pics

Does this grey wire have a copper core or is it to help strip back the black outer covering

Some 12n wiring set-ups have more then 7 Cables,

maybe you had "Fog Light Cut Off" in your old socket

Try you fog lights on the car they may not work now

Thanks for all your advice - fog lights still work, and no little grey wire on tow it all site, so tucked it out the way! All rear lights work now apart from the brake lights so have that one to figure out now! Attached gas bottle too and grill and burners work, but not cooker. You can't smell gas when you go to light it, so might it be blocked somewhere? We're off on our first jaunt this weekend to Kelling Heath, Norfolk, hopefully there'll be someone on hand to lend a hand!

Amanda,

On the 12N black socket, the red wire (pin6)is for the brake lights. It should have 12v with pin 3 (white) when the brake lights are on.Take the plug cover off to access the pins and carefully plug it back into the car. You can then check it with the 'van connected.

Good luck,

Ron

Hello Amanda,

I meant take the cover off the black 12N plug on the 'van to reveal the wires. Now carefully plug it into the car and try the brakes. You should have 12volts between the red & white wires with your foot on the brake. If so, the car is wired OK. If not check the wiring from the brakelight bulbs in the car. If you do have 12volts OK and the van brake lights still don't come on, you have a fault on the caravan. (like both brake lamp bulbs faulty?...Unlikely but possible)

Hope you get it sorted.

Ron
