My new van came with an adaptor to switch 13 pin to two 7 pins however after one journey the wires are pulling out even tough supported with a bungee. Is this a common problem and how easy is it to rewire its the grey cable where it enters the 13 pin bit

What connection do you have on the car?
If the 2 x 7 pin system you would be better changing to a 13 pin socket.

If the van has the 2 x 7 pin plugs, change to a 13 pin plug, you can get one which has provision for the two cables, black and grey.

Adaptors always cause problems.

I had 13 pin on my new caravan and grey and black sockets on Sorento. I used a converter cable for just over a year but then found I was get pin burn out on grey plug on the converter cable. In the end I had sockets on my Sorento converted by Indespension to 13 pin cost around £50. no problems since then.

I have towed for many years with a splitter, and not had any problems. If the wires are pulling out, then either they have not been screwed in tight enough, or more likely, the set up too short somewhere - perhaps the bungee is restricting cable flexibility too much?
Re wiring is always fiddly, but easy enough - just do one wire at a time, and maybe take a pic, if you don't have a wiring diagram to hand. Add a drop of Loctite threadlock to the screws before you tighten them, then they won't undo themselves - its available from motor factors and model shops.

I have experienced similar problem. New caravan with 13 pin socket connects readily to Landy, and lights all work, but after try out other aspects, find the portable freezer with dual voltage works on 220 only, and the engine does not put power into the leisure battery.
Is this same cause ? I need Landy rewiring !
