only marking on the outside is 'made in Italy' Am in France so don't want to break it altogether. Could just jumper the rear lights together in side the van till I get home.

As Ray has said, there are 3 types, the type he has , two plastic lugs.
One of the other type, the rear part unscrews and the plug comes forward.
Another type you need a screwdriver and looking down the pin end, turn the inner part anticlockwise using the keyway as a lever point, then the pin section comes forward

Thanks Damian,
will try that tomorrow. Sounds like the third kind. I can see the inner part moves but didn't want to risk breaking it. An hour in front of you here and starting to get dark so a job for tomorrow.

Home now. Didn't want to break it and make things worse. The inner turns as you suggest but it didn't want to come out so jumpered the rear lights together from within the van. can look at it at leisure now and maybe replace whole plug if I damage it. Good trip tho . 3500 miles of troublefree driving over 6 weeks. Isn't the sound of rain romantic on the van roof???
will update when I'm over the jet lag....

Finally got into the plug - it was the nearside rear light cable had pulled out of the back of the pin. I bought a new plug as I could not see the old one coming apart w/o damage. The new plug came with a stwoage/blank which I used to turn the inner round to the point where it releases forward! Simple when you see it but without any markings on the outside of the plug it was a mystery to me. Still all's well that end's well as they say - live and learn. Thanks for the advice which I was too dim to understand :)
