Yes, if the car is correctly wired then when you plug into the car (ignition OFF) and select car battery on the caravan control panel, the caravan will run off the car battery.

Be careful not to flatten the car battery.

Ring the manufacturers Customer Care line and get the definitive answer if the information is not in the handbooks supplied with the van

We have a question with a 13pin plug. Slightly different to the original question raised. Our van has twin elecs but my new car, the dealer fitted single. They have supplied an adaptor which seems to work albeit from the fridge. With the previous car and its twin, when the van was switched across to car, the red battery light illuminated on the fridge. When using the single electrics, it doesnt. However, to check i flicked the gas ignition button and this flashed and you culd hear the fridge try to ignite proving there was power to the fridge. (The leisure battery and mains were both disconnected to prove to myself power was from the car)

I am wondering if there is a fault here or has by a coincidence has the bulb blown?

Have you checked all the pins on the car to make sure there is power where there ought to be?
I presume you are using an adaptor to plug van to car? If the car pins are OK then you need to check the adaptor. These have often been found to be incorrectly wired, or even some pins not wired at all.
I am not sure that trying to light the fridge on gas prooves that the car is supplying power.

Peter...........So you are finding that this automatic selection is not working?
What van do you have, have you taken it up with your dealer?
If they are not helping then as Damian said the next stop is the manufacturer.
We have 13 pin and have no problem with anything not working.

Have you got a 13 pin socket on the car?

Did you test the fridge with the cars engine running? you may also have to rev the engine slightly to provide power.

If you are getting around 14volt across the battery, car connected, engine running, then you should be getting 12volt to the fridge, unless a relay has failed in the caravan, assuming it uses relays, what make and year is your caravan?

yes the car engine was running. The voltmeter looked about 14v. The van is Bailey Pageant Magenta 1997.

We are going to try a cousin's car who has twin electrics to see what happens

Some manufacturers fail to connect pins 10 & 11 of the 13 pin socket on the car, which are the designated 12volt supply for the fridge.
With the car engine running you should get at least 12 volts if you measure it with a test meter. Pin 10 is the power and pin 11 is the common return.

If you have the correct voltage on the car 13 pin socket it could be the 13 pin to 12N & 12S adaptor (double 7 pin). The fridge supply is on the 12S socket (white one) where pin 6 is power and pin 7 the common return. Once again check these with a test meter for at least 12 volts.

I should also mention it is preferable to measure these voltages under some sort of load condition just in case there is a high resistance connection which is failing under load.

Best regards

Here is a wiring diagram for the 13pin connector, print it off & get it laminated, & then save it in the van, just in case you might ever need it.

Just wanted to say thanks for the wiring diagram.

My caravan engineer tested the van and the fridge was fine so i took the car manufacters wiring diagram, which staed pin 9 for the fridge, and the diagram you sent me which says pin 10 and shoved it in the dealers face and told them to fix it.

It goes in monday. I have my doubts though.
