When I purchased my plug (less than a tenner) it was supplied with a green storage cover which protects the plug in storage and also keeps the pins lined up. Never had a problem with the plug turning. I don't see how cable ties will stop your problem reoccurring.

never done any thing to mine , had them a year now , i think people try and push them in wich damages the pins , as long as you keep the flat head vertical when you insert the plug then give a gentle turn to horozontal , shouldnt be any probs

think you will find it is the other way round the plug inserts horizontal and then turns vertical as then the flat top is held by the springed cap on the socket

Joeby is correct upright is vetical, flat is horizontal.
yes I know it is and is still the wrong way round
"if you insert the plug vertical ie with the flat bit on the top and then turn 90 degrees so the flat bit is in the quarter past or horizontal how is the sprung cap going to hold the plug in place"
in order for this to happen the plug has to be inserted horizontaly with the flat bit at a "quarter two" then when the plug is turned 90degrees the flat bit will be on the top the sprug cap will hold the whole plug secure. I think you will find this is correct.
edit,
if this is not the case with your plug the insert is twisted and not located in the groove at the btm

I think that everyone is saying the same thing, but in a different manner.
A 13 pin plug needs to start its location to the socket with the flat disc at the 9 o'clock position which means the flat face of the disc is vertical.
As it engages with the socket it turns the flat disc to the 12 o'clock poition which means the flat face of the disc is now horizontal and the socket cover comes down and rests on the flat face of the plug.

It is possible to wrongly locate the inner part of the plug which then results in the flat disc being wrongly aligned at the finish, in which case it needs relocating.
There is no need to push the plug in, it is drawn in by the screw thread of the socket.

Thank you Damian that is what is was saying the flat vertical when inserting, when turned 90 degrees clockwise it is then horizontal in the locking position. The flat on top was horizontal when i went to school

The plug has a tab at 180degrees, ie the bottom of the socket. The plug can't be inserted incorrectly.
The plug does not turn it is the outer sheath on the plug that turns. This outer sheath moves, out of alignment, when the plug is withdrawn.
The pins move along the horizontal axis as the outer sheath moves through 90degrees to be locked by the flap.
The green parking cap is handy but just hold the plug at a slight angle and use the tab at the bottom to stop it turning and move the sleeve back to the correct position of 90degrees from vertical.

hi all,
yes the plug works as decribed, above I think it is just a case of diferent terminology to mean the same thing,
the main problem that occurs as it seems to me is the inset gets twited in some cases and then the start point for plug insertion is wrong, the plugs outer sleeve in such a case would then be in the wrong place and unable to locate the 3 outer lugs on the socket to draw the plug in correctly,

unfortunatly while the design and fittment of the socket seems pretty standard, not all plugs are of the same quality or design,
while rewiring the car and van to 13pin, I had noticed the flimsy nature of the insert locator and method of attachment of the inner working of the plug purchased of e-bay. apart from the the small groove at the btm of the inside of plug there was nothing to stop the insert from moving in service, this was disergarded in favour of one from towsure that was more secure and smoother on operation allthough twice the price, even so I added a few drops of superglue to the insert on assembly to make sure it could not move,
since rewiring I have had no trouble with connecting the electrics at all it is super smooth and connects every time,
the very fact that some plugs come complete with a green cover/ realighnment tool makes me think it is a common problem though.

I had the same problem as well, but find it better to line it up at the 12o/c setting and it work fine, did find that the van rear and side marker light was't coming on all the time, found out it was the middle piece that the 3 screw was't in far enough, since then it been fine, Trevor123

We had the issue on our 2011 caravan due to the 13 pin plug supplied. What was happening is that when you removed the plug from the resting hole on the A frame and moved it to connect to the car electrics, the wire would twist moving the pins out of alignment. Third plug fitted which was not of Chinese origin worked fine and no further issues.
