Hi,

Regarding the new 13 amp sockets does anyone know if it is expensive to change them on the car from 12n and s to 13. Also is a big job and 1 more question will they be available in curly cable form?

Thanks in advance

The 13 pin socket and plug are similar in price to the 12N+S connectors - bearing in mind you only need to buy one...

Is it a big job, no. It's an easy DIY job, but only if you are skilled at DIY. But if you need to pay for the work...

13 pin ISO 11446 connectors are the standard HGV truck connector, but in 24 volt form, and most of these use curly cables - so yes, I'd expect them to become available.

Robert,

Will a 13pin socket fit the existing 12n / 12s plate. Are the holes the same or is a new plate needed?

You will almost certainly need a new single hole plate for the 13 pin socket.

And I'd make sure I had the mounting plate in my hand, together with the socket, and the bolts, etc, before starting any work.

Most people coming to a 13 pin socket / plug will do so because they have bought a German caravan, or have a real factory fitted tow-bar - in which case they will benefit from the "swing-up and hide" design of the 13 pin socket on a factory mount - so I've never actually fitted a 13 pin socket to a fixed mount (such as on a 12N+S replacement).

As it happens I have just replaced both my car and caravan 12S & 12N sockets with 13pin.(in last ten days). Very easy job, I personnaly used inline crimp terminals with self almalgamating tape to provide weather proofing. You will, obviously, need to get yourself some 13 core cable, wiring layout, (easily downloaded from web). One thing to be aware of, when wiring that there is apparently two colour coded 13 core cable, very subtly differences.

I am considering changing from my twin 7 pin to the single 13 pin.

Am I likely to need to take the car back to the dealer for a "reset" of the multiplex "Canbus" system?

It was needed when the original 7 pin system was fitted.

JTQ,

It's my understanding that the ECU update you're talking about was there to inform the car ECU that you now have a trailer tow-bar installed.

This update will do things like turn off the car fog lights when you plug the caravan in, turn on TSA (if your car has that feature), etc.

So the upgrade to the ECU was really more like setting a switch, rather than a change to canBUS. And I doubt if changing the plug will do anything to disturb that, unless you start blowing fuses...
