Hello

I have just purchased a new Audi A6 and I have had a towbar and 13pin electrics fitted. I have purchased a 13 pin to 2 x 7pin adapter as my caravan is a 2001 Swift Archway Denford with the grey and black leads.

The black plug and socket connect ok and the lights etc work. The grey socket on my new adapter lead has six pins or sockets around the outside and the centre one is a pin not a socket. The grey lead from the caravan also has a central pin, meaning that this gives a pin to pin, not a pin to socket connection and I cannot connect the two leads. Are there different types of adapter leads? Have I purchased the wrong one?

The central pin on the adapter lead has a black wire and is listed as an "earth/return". There are other return leads on this grey adapter, could I remove the central pin altogether and connect this lead in with one of the other returns?

Any help would be appreciated

John, I think you've got the wrong adapter. There are two, one for connecting a 13 pin car up to a twin 7 pin caravan, and one for connecting a twin 7 pin car up to a 13 pin caravan. If you go to www.towsure.co.uk and do two searches, one under E603 and the other under E604, you will see the difference. You need E603.The grey plug on your adapter should have two pins and five sockets.

Changing the black wire to another earth pin not recommended, as it is the fridge return, and requires its own connection.

John,

It certainly sounds like you've got the wrong adapter, sounds like you've got the one for a caravan with 13 pin socket to car with 12n & 12s sockets & not for a car with 13 pin electrics to caravan with 12n & 12s electrics.

incedentaly did you have the tow bar & elctrics retro fitted or were they factory fitted? if the latter check your 13 pin socket & make sure that pins 10, 11 & 12 actually have pins in them!!! see my reply in this section to the main heading "Volvo towing electrics"

Hi Eddie

Many thanks, I was heading down that line of thought myself. I did buy it from a large caravan dealer and the chap there did seem to know what he was doing. But i am sure that you are right it is the wrong lead

Thanks again

Hi GeorgeB

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I am pretty sure that I have the wrong lead

The towbar and electrics were fitted afterwards by the dealer. The car was a 2 month old demonstrator. The dealer assures me that the electrics are fully wired and should do everthing that is needed.

John
