Hi,

We are soon to get our first caravan - a new Coachman. Do people generally use a single gas cylinder or carry 2? or carry a small back-up to tide them over 'till the large one can be exchanged?

Thanks for any thoughts/advice

Tom

Hi Tom,

We always carry 2. That way we can swap over cylinders if one runs out. Then we get the mt one refilled. What type of gas/cylinders have you got. For the last 2 years we have been using BP Litegas.

What model of coachman have you got. We have an Amara 520/4.

Pat,

We haven't got any gas cylinders yet. The caravan is a Laser 655/6 and we should get it mid-late Feb. According to the Calor site , it ought to come rigged up with the new euro regulator.

If you are starting from scratch and can't get cylinders by devious means (from the tip or a friendly traveller)investigate BP GASLIGHT. It's a bit cheaper than calor (kg for kg) the cylinders are much lighter and are made of fibreglass/composite materials so don't rust. They hold more gas 5 and 10 kg compared with Calor 3.8 or 6kg for propane. They are propane so can be used all year round and the regulator or adapater (you'd need an adapter) will fit the french LeCube cylinders if you feel the need to go to France for an extended period. It's also got a clip on valve so the spanner that always gets lost is a thing of the past (you can swap the adapter over with your eyes shut (or even in the dark)) You can get BPGaslight at Homebase as well. We've had them eversince they acame out and I reckon they are far better than calor and if you have two then you'll never need to run out.

I've never had a problem but as it lasts for ages we don't have to change them very frequently. I got one in Inverness last year without problems at a Homebase. But our nearest caravan dealers both about 15 miles away stock it as well. I had two 5kg but when one eventually ran out I swapped it for a 10kg which I still haven't started yet. We generally only use gas for cooking as we are normally on sites with EHU - even over Xmas we only used the gas to cook. Two 10kg ones is nearly twice as much gas as two 6kg calor so it would last for a a lot longer and it's still lighter than two 6kg standard cylinders, don't know how the weight compares with 6kg CalorLite about the same I suspect

We carry one 11kg cylinder if its full enough for the trip but if its near empty we carry an additional full one. Thats in the UK.

On the Continent we carry a full 11kg plus a small Camping Gaz 907 if its going to be over 5 weeks; if under then a 6 kg and the Camping Gaz.

Dont bother how much is in the Camping Gaz, just what was left from its last visit abroad as it can be exchanged easily over there if needed.

Cant see the logic in routinely carrying two cylinders if there is no risk of running out on that trip.

Hi Tom

We carry 1 6kg propane over here and if we go to France we take a half full camping gaz 907 as well (you can buy them in the supermarkets). We have to be careful with our noseweight and decided not to take 2.

We use Flogas and the supplier doesnt charge any deposit so if we are going abroad we just get another full one and give him the empty back when finished. Most of the hire places exchange,eg Plantool,if we are going to an area for a couple of weeks we just look up a supplier on their website in case of a leak, its a bit cheaper than Calor as well

We use 2 flo gas 7Kg nett bottles. Like dave, we get the bottles free and even if you exchange another suppliers bottle they won't refuse unlike some of the others.

Price wise, we pay
