It seems a long time off but I have to start putting the plans into place for my 2006 holiday.

My wife and I (No Kids)are keen to visit Lake Garda in June for 3 weeks total holiday time, but have never ventured outside the UK with the caravan before.

I have a Rallye 640 twin axle towed by a Sorento 2.5D auto and will be travelling from the N.E. England (Long haul).

I have a number of questions from the various forums I have read and look for your help.

1)Can anyone recommend suitable sites in the Lake Garda area for two "Geordie Oldies" urgh mid 50's.

2)Recommend best route i.e. from ferry crossing to site.

3)Recommend best ferry port and crosing time and journey to site time.

4)Recommend best stop overs both UK and enroute Europe.

5)Do you think we should go it alone or book through a club or use camping cheques?

6)What problems do you think we will have in towing a twin axle and being accepted at European sites?

7)Are the pitches in Europe big enough for a TA or will it be tight squeeze?

Its all very exciting stuff and I am sure you guys (girls also) out there can be a big help.

Looking forward to your input to my 2006 holiday.

Thanks, John D

I had problems getting a pitch at several of the sites on Lake Garda and my van is a Swift Challenger 490 - The sites will often only admit caravans under 6.5 meters (shipping Length)

Hi John

Came back from Garda 3 weeks ago, in answer to you questions

1. We stayed at Belle Italia near Pasheira, right on the lake.

2. calais, lille, luxembourg, strasbourg, basle, milan, garda.

3. take the cheapest crossing ie dover - calais

route time depends on how you like to drive, i got early evening crossing into calais and stopped at the port, 8 am on the road, allowing for toilet and stretch stops we put our legs down at Lake Geneva in switzerland about 8 pm that night.

Left about 9.30 next morning and on site Belle Italia by 3 pm

5. if completing holiday before 28th June then deffinetly use camping cheques,

Hi,

Don't know much about camping but I love the Lake Garda area - a quick browse on Google came up with this: http://www.rivadelgarda.com/eng/Campings/List/

I have stayed in Riva del Garda which is at the north of the lake, and I remember there being a campsite right on the beach. There are ferries which take you down the lake, lots of nice little places to explore. Busy though.

hope this (very little) info helps.

Try Lake Iseo instead of Garda which is very commercialised. Iseo town is a gem and the lake is superb with stunning scenery. Try www.puntadoro.com a family run site right on the lake. Last year we were pitched with our A frame overhanging the water. These pitches are in high demand and cost a small premium. Large vans can be a problem in Italy as pitches are smaller than France or other European countries. But don't be put off ...go it is so easy on the other side of the Channel. We've been doing it for 35 years including working a campsite for 2 seasons.

John - Lake Garda and the area around the town of Garda has many sites suitable for what you are looking for. I travel from the NE, leaving about 6.00pm for the 0400am Dover to Calais ferry. I park at the Calais terminal for a couple of hours rest and then head for Italy using toll free motorways via Belgium, Luxembourg (a nights stop in Berncastel on the Moselle valley) then down the autobahn to Stuttgart then Turn Right at Ulm down to Austrian Border. The Austrians impose a fee for using their roads and you must pay the charge at the border crossing. you then head for the Brenner Pass and down to Lake Garda.

This has over the years proved to be the cheapest although not the quickest route to Italy and if you choose your route carefully you can travel through some of the best countriside in Europe ( Mosell and Rhine valleys. the romantic strasse and through Bavaria with the trip down the Brenner pass allowing you to see the Dolomites.

If you wish for me to give you some other details of my experiences let me have your Email address.

Regards

Many thanks.

My name: Some time ago Mr. Blair said that he was going to nominate People's Peers, so I thought I'd offer my services. Evans obviously but why Sprot? At that time they had just opened a new giratory roundabout at the end of the road leading to the village in which I live. And signed on the road was 'Sprot'; part of the name of my village!

Mr. Blair then put into the House of Lords lots of his cronies!

Shiraz, I am off to Lake Garda yet again this year, and normally go through Switzerland. Is it any easier, then, to go through Austria? I am breaking the journey with 3 nights in Luxembourg, but when we go on to Garda we just want to get there (as you do). So which do you think is best, Switzerland or Austria?

Just arrived back form Lake Garda. Travelled from North Yorks through the Channel Tunnel.

Stayed for our first night at Chateau du Gandspette Nr Calais. Good facilities, lots of Brits on overnight stops.

Travelled through Belgium, Luxembourg and into Germany. Stayed at Camping Hengstbacher-Muhle nr Zweibrucken. Very basic facilities but ideal overnight stop.

On to the Bavarian region and an overnight at Camping Hopfensee nr Fussen. 5 star site with fantastic facilities including the best shower block I have ever seen on a caravan site.

Last day through Austria via the Fern Pass and Brenner pass (both easily negotiated) and onto Italy. Stayed for 9 days at Camping Fontanelle in Moniga del Garda. Lovely site on shores of lake with good facilities. Easy walk into Moniga where there is a weekly market, shops and restaurants. Hop on the ferry across the lake to Sirmione, Desenzano or Riva. I would also recommend a visit to Salo which is about 20 minutes away by car. We caught the train to Verona (30 minutes) and took the car to Venice (about 2 hours).

We returned via the Mont Blanc tunnel (stopping 8 days in the French Alps at Camping L'Escale) and through France with 2 overnight stops.

We tried not to travel more than 250 miles a day (apart from our journey in the UK), this enabled us to arrive at each new site in the early afternoon. We booked most of our sites through the Caravan Club's travel service, but all are bookable direct. We are planning to return to Camping Fontanelle next year with a week in Tuscany.

Hope this helps.
