Was wondering if anybody uses a 3 way splitter - was thinking on purchasing - as we have no outside socket on our caravan and dangle a ext lead out window for power to awning at the moment. This would allow us to have cable for power to caravan and another cable for power to the awning with the awning sockets being RCD protected as well. Wasn't sure if any sites would have a problem with using a splitter.

As far as I know there is not a 240V Y splitter available. There is a 110 volt version for us in the construction industry.

Personally, I would have a proper socket fitted so that you can use it within the safety of your own caravan's electrical protection circuit.

On a site I recently stopped on I discovered that the site trip was actually rated at 45amps, which far exceeded our caravans 16 amp mcb/Rcd set up, so by using the site supply direct via a splitter, you could be in a very dodgy situation.

Hello V

Using your suggestion of a 16A (CEEFORM) splitter, the caravan RCD would not protect your awning supply, nor would it be protected by an MCB (over current protection) You would be relying on the sites bollard protection.

You could potentially over load the bollards current limit without the caravan tripping first.

This is not recommended.

It would be more sensible and safer to arrange to have an external CEEFORM socket fitted to the caravan which draws its feed from the 10A circuit MCB of the caravan. This keeps the awning supply fully protected and will prevent you from over loading the bollard.

It will also mean less cabling and weight to carry and set up.

I would use a tent supply post, then feed the caravan from this, towsure sell one. Or someone mentioned a double socket arrangement, were you replaced the existing caravan socket for one with a piggy back socket to feed the awning, this was on a post from sometime back.

It may not be adviseable but in France who cares!!

We had a splitter provided at Guinnes by the site admin

On another site at Poulan sur Mer they had multiple connectors intended for indoors outside and there were no problems --until it rained !!

Its quite common for European vans to have a van end blue plug with a socket built for awning use but as the OP stated a circuit breaker lead should be used as well
