I hope some of you know what today is ,it was 63 years ago today ,that one of the biggest invasions by sea the world has ever seen ,took place in the English channel ,and thousands lost there lives in just a few hours ,i have been over to the French coast a few times ,some of the landing craft & tanks & mullbury harbours are still there ,and it still brings tears to my eyes ,thinking of all those brave young men most of them still in there teens ,who had there life wiped before it begun ,i hope some of you are thinking of them today

Yes well aware and 63 years on the 10th since the 2nd SS Panzer destroted Oradour sur Glane and murdered the entire population.
sorry forgot to put that this atrocity was a direct act of retribution for the invasion.

Plotter, we went there last year. I don't know which is the more emotional, that or the Menin Gate. I know that while walking the streets in Ouradur, the hair stood up on the back of my neck, and I failed to enter the cemetery. It was an awful experience, but one that I feel everyone should visit at least once, and world leaders should be made to stay overnight.

One point I picked up on was that a lot of the German Army who carried out the atrocity were French conscripts.

Emmerson, yes it was soldiers from Alsace, and it caused a lot of trouble because De Gaulle failed to take what was felt was appropriate action and as you probably saw the monument bulit by the state is empty as a new one was bulit by local people.

We went about 3 years ago and I know what you mean and agree if more went it would have an impact on how they view things.I felt that yes I had to go and not to would be an insult to the memory of thoses that were butchered by the SS,having said that I also had an overwhelming feeling of intruding. If you have been you will know what I mean
