I have picked up our caravan and placed it in storage all's gone well so far. I have a couple of questions as a beginer which i'm sure you can all anwser 1 - is it wise to somehow chain your water carriers up when on site both the fresh and waste. 2 - What cleaners do you use around the van ie antibacterial on sinks etc etc bearing in mind the seals and plastic pipe work. 3 - Whers the best place to buy caravan loo roll, it does seem to be expensive in the dealers shops.

I expect some will disagree, but my water containers and waste are never chained up. We use the same cleaners as we do at home. We also use the same loo rolls as at home.

Enjoy your caravan!

Hello Graham,

The easy one first, AS PR suggests the normal household cleaners are usually quite satisfactory. After all the materials and finishes we see in caravans are essentially the same as those at home.

As for toilet rolls, we use a normal low cost domestic soft tissue type. All rolls these days have to be bio degradable, its just that some take a bit longer to breakdown than others.

Now your point where there's no definitive right or wrong answer. It depends on what risk you are prepared to take.

Theft from caravan sites is still thankfully very low, and I (and most caravanners on this forum know) know many caravanning friends who have never had a theft of any of their property. So the chances are that if you don't secure belongings, then 9 times out of 10 nothing will happen. But times are changing, and it does seem that theft may be on the increase, so it is probably wise to secure your belongings, and not to leave temptations.

There is another consideration. If you were to have someone thieve an item of equipment it would certainly spoil your holiday, and may prevent you from using your caravan, but also if you haven't taken reasonable precautions to prevent theft, then your insurance is likely to be invalid.

Hi we don't chain our water or waste carriers up. In fact we don't chain up the cadac either. We use cheap loo roll from sipermarkets. Not the quilted or thick stuff, the cheaper thinner stuff breaks down more quickly and doesn't fill the tank so fast. Be careful using neat bleaches or milton, it can corrode metal if left in contact too long.

Be very careful with what cleaners you use in caravans.
Contrary to Prof JohnL's post, the eqipment in caravans is nowhere near as robust as domestic items.
Most of the plastics manufacturers only recommend using a very mild soap to clean the sink and toilet bowl.
If you use mouthwash at all, ALWAYS run the cold water when spitting the mouthwash out , it WILL cause irreversable damage to the plastic.Better still dont have mouthwash anywhere near the van !

I bow to Damians more extensive knowledge of recent caravans. Check withe the manufactures instructions is the correct answer of course.

Just in my own experience I and my friends have never had a problem with normal household goods.

Thank you everyone for your replies, it looks 50/50 ish on both questions. I am insured with the CC just in case. Maybe a wire type cycle lock, cheap loo roll and and just soap and water will sufice. On another note this coming wk-end will be our first away in the van so no doubt i will be back with a few more questions.

Thanks again
Graham.
