A slightly 'caravan' (rather a motorhome) related story

Only in America!

Stella Awards

It's time again for the annual 'Stella Awards'! For those unfamiliar with these awards, they are named after 81-year-old Stella Liebeck who spilled hot coffee on herself and successfully sued the McDonald's in New Mexico , where she purchased coffee. You remember, she took the lid off the coffee and put it between her knees while she was driving. Who would ever think one could get burned doing that, right? That's right; these are awards for the most outlandish lawsuits and verdicts in the U.S. You know, the kinds of cases that make you scratch your head. So keep your head scratcher handy.

* FIRST PLACE *

This year's runaway First Place Stella Award winner was: Mrs. Merv Grazinski, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, who purchased new 32-foot Winnebago motor home. On her first trip home, from an OU football game, having driven on to the freeway, she set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the driver's seat to go to the back of the Winnebago to make herself a sandwich. Not surprisingly, the motor home left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Also not surprisingly, Mrs. Grazinski sued Winnebago for not putting in the owner's manual that she couldn't actually leave the driver's seat while the cruise control was set. The Oklahoma jury awarded her, are you sitting down?

$1,750,000 PLUS a new motor home. Winnebago actually changed their manuals as a result of this suit, just in case Mrs. Grazinski has any relatives who might also buy a motor home.

Apparently so - but just an attempt to put a little amusement into this forum - and at least a bit caravan related, I thought.

I also heard it many years ago, and whilst I trust the person who told me implicitly, I cannot say if its true or not.

Other similar stories, The manufacture that did not tell customer not to dry their pets in microwave ovens.

The knife manufacture who was told to make sure customers knew their products contained sharp edged that might cut.

The hedge trimmer that did not tell customers its not suitable for cutting hair.

The sad thing is that there is probably some truth to them.

I read in the daily mail (nope I didn't buy it - was in the staff room at work) last week that a 15 year old was asked how old he was when he tried buying WINE-GUMS !!

Oh dear !!

I was following the sad posts on the other thread here, then I realsised how sad this wine gum story is in our PC society.

Wine gums don't contain wine or alcohol as far as I've ever seen.

It's just a sign of the times and really we shouldn't be posting such subjects as it breaks the rules of the forum now by commenting.

I think PC magazine has lost its way with the forum and moderation.
