Aerosol Brake & Clutch Cleaner

Hi Frank, I've used this stuff for a few years now. I clean the towball the surface of the pads with firne emery cloth and then spray the ball and up inside the coupling with the aerosol. The brand I use has a nozzle that directs a strong jet to remove particles from the emery and also the carbon from the diesel exhaust.

Hi,

Brake cleaner is a 50:50 mix of hydrocarbon solvent (usually heptane) and alcolhol (usually iso-propanol) - the hydrocarbon part does the shifting - the alcohol delays the evaporation time.

It will degrease the tow ball and the pads inside the tow coupling quite nicely.

White spirit is also equally effective, for a fraction of the price, but takes longer to dry.

Neither leave any deposit and are safe on metal and paint finishes.

I've said before how useful this stuff is for cleaning just about anything, however a word of caution. Being a powerful spray the over spray can go anywhere and I have found it will instantly and permanently mark some painted plastic surfaces it may land on. An example is the household cordless phone, so be careful whats around and about when you use it.

Frank,

If you don't wear glasses, it's a good idea to buy and wear a pair of safety spectacles (big, wrap around glasses) from B&Q or another favourite DIY shop.

Aerosol brake cleaner has a strong propellant - and it really jets out of the can - a splash of it in your eye will sting more than a little bit.
