Hello Paul,
There is nothing magical about caravan roof mounted Air Con units, so you can contact most air con specialists and they should be able to maintain including re-gassing caravan systems. Even Car garages that offer AC services should be able to complete the job.

Most AC service agents are mobile, as most systems are fixed in buildings, so that should not be a problem, but of course your caravan could be towed to a service center, so you have both options available.

All AC units must have a label that specifies the type of refrigerant used and how much. So any properly qualified AC engineer should be able to work on the system.

Use the yellow pages or the internet to find AC service near you, then call around for estimates/quotes

Is it a Dometic?
There is a list of engineers on the Dometic web site. but you will find most of them do not want to know.
If it has lost its gas, it seems that there is nobody in UK that can regas it, not even Dometic themselves.
If the unit is not that old, you may get Dometic to replace it.

Caravan AC units are notorious for loosing gas as unlike car and home units (fridges/dehumidifiers) they are run only rarely, so as well as having to be recharged they often need the seals replacing too. Otherwise the charge just disappears. To my mind they are more hassle than they are worth. On sites we have used in the Med area they were banned from use during the nights on account of their noise.

Lack of use is a point I hadn't considered as I haven't discounted getting a/c in the future - in which case the seals can be kept in good order by running the a/c for an hour once a month, all year round - but only practical if you have EHU at storage (we do).

It's a pity that Dometic do not include this advice in their instructions, at least they didn't in 2008, perhaps they do now.
As I understand it......the Dometic unit has no regassing point, and anyway there is nobody in UK licenced to use the chemical involved.......this information was supplied by Dometic themselves,so I assume it must be correct.

So if the unit fails due to losing the gas, the only option is to replace it. Ours failed after 3 years so Dometic eventually agreed to replace it before we went down the Sale of Goods Act route, but it took over a year to get a resolution.

The unit itself is very effective in use, and ours was/is not noisy in use as heard from outside. It would not keep the neighbours awake, but is noisier inside the van, so we would not use it at night. Best way to use is to have it keep the van cool all day so it never gets too hot to start with, then turn off overnight.
