I'm not a Royalist either Colin but believe they bring stability to the country. I don't only think, I am sure, that there are far more pressing issues in this country that is costing us billions than dumping the Royal family and becoming a Republic and the cost that implicates. The Royals as you say generate a lot of money for the Exchequer and annually they cost us 61p for each member of the population.

For a start let us address AND stop this country being the dumping ground for economic migrants and the worlds criminals.

At least while we have the Royal family we are hanging on to one of our last traditions and not giving over another institution of British life due to multiculturism and the liberal thinkers :O)

At the very least, i do wish we had a more slimmed down and modern royal establishment, more in contact with the normal people[whats normal]

I recall a programme on the royals, and ted heath was talking to the queen about iraq.

He wanted better contact with them to sort out the middle east.

She stated it was a far too dangerous regime/country, something

like that.

Ted then stated "he had been there",to which she replied, "yes but you are expendable".

That sort of mentality, and the speed of the reply, reminded me of a time atleast 2 or 3 centuries ago.

Just a totally out of touch comment where somebodies life is irrelevent.

I really hope will becomes king sooner rather than later....

The icing on the cake for me was when Alf was asked if he also thought the Queen had been involved in the plot to kill Di.

"No not really......she's not important enough!"

CLASSIC!!!!

"For a start let us address AND stop this country being the dumping ground for economic migrants and the worlds criminals".

If this is the most pressing issues we need to worry about, then i believe i have missed several key incidents.

I assume the education system is now thankfully running ok,

As is the NHS. I seem to have missed the extra police officers back on the street, whilst civilians handle the mundane paperwork.

I am also glad that private pensions are now back on track and those that had shortfalls have been compensated.

I seem to have missed the several new power stations that have been build, not only for the extra supply we seem to need, but because of there efficientcy, our heating bills will shortly start to decrease.

I assume northern rock has been sold now, so we the taxpayers have had this noose removed from our burden.

And there are a load of other day to day things i wish we could improve, that effect us ALL far,far more.

Sorry LB,no really, i wish we could sort out the criminals whoever they are, unless you are assuming ours are a better class of criminal.

And as for economical migrants ? history my friend history....

No it's not gio, it's being held back because teachers are having to spend more time with pupils who haven't the basic understanding of English. Teachers are having to learn how to communicate with these pupils.

"As is the NHS"

Nor that gio, check out the hospitals where there is a high immigrant population like here in Hereford where 1 in 6 is an immigrant. You will find the casualty waiting rooms full of them. Who is paying for their treatment?

"I seem to have missed the extra police officers back on the street"

Exactly, they are probably back at school as they are in West Mercia, learning Russian. In West Mercia and according to yesterdays report from the Chief of Cambridgeshire Police crime has increase by about 800% due to the immigrants.

Do you see where I'm coming from gio? Theres three of your problems solved by addressing the one problem I mentioned - immigration :O)

LB, yes i think i do,but surely we are talking about a minority here?

Just look at the sort of treatment and slander the irish took, very little of it was true or it was only true of a small minority.

Well at least Al Fayed has doe some work in his life un-like are pampered pet Royals.

If you swallow that they are value for money then god help us, no wonder we get the politicians we have at present.

If Royalty offered value for money, they would pay the same taxes as us and have open expense accounts.

There would be no need for hidden details of their wills and no need for the illegal transfer of property such as the current case with Royal Lodge at Windsor and Air Miles Andy.

If I had Grand children how wonderful for them to be able to play at soldiers and airman and pick any career they wanted no matter how dim they were.

Royalty has little value, and none of us have voted for them so they are not a valid part of our society.

ps, tourists come and spend money to see buildings and gaurds etc not the Frankenstein family

Al Fayed is a very well balanced person .. he has a chip on both shoulders, especially since he wasn't granted British citizenship. He has a score to settle.

BTW if there was no royal family wouldn't that mean no guards?

Or Buckingham Palace for that matter. Look how many of our eastern continental and African cousins could be housed there if they turned it into flats. Maybe the Household Cavalry could be replaced by Securicor Guards and use Buck House as a reception centre for our cousins from overseas :O)

And at what cost to the tax payer for an alternative?

Polticians are all like pigs with their feet in the trough, why would an elected president be any different?

And howmany tourists would flock to Britain to se a president?

It would be a sad day!

We still need soldiers, so thy can carry on gaurding.

If you only have gaurds for ceremonial and tourists, but do away with Royalty Dave and Dee you save the Tax payer a small fortune.

President Blair has just been succeded by President Brown, so no need for any other cost and if he should get assasinated (we can live in hope;-) there are plenty to fill his shoes without breeding heir and spare at more cost.

Even to a hard-up old ****** like me I don't call 61p a year a fortune.

Statistic, bloody statistics.... I really do not know if the royal family does cost us 61p each, but i really doubt that tourism would really suffer.

London is a world magnet, with or without them and its selling london short if you think any one lost item would distroy its popularity.

Afterall people visit buckingham palace everyday, without ever seeing the royals, and london has far far more attractions than just the royal residence.

Anyway was not advercating to get rid of them.

Jason you keep pontificating on about the monarchy but you haven't given us an alternative yet.

Tourists come to see the changing of the guard, trooping of the colour etc. I do realise they don't stand around Buck House hoping for a cup of Earl Grey.

So the alternative is a British Sarkozy or Berlosconi is it?

As I said I'm not a royalist but neither am I a republican but given a choice I will vote to stay as we are with the proviso that only the Queen, Charles and William get money from the Civil List. If the Queen abdicates and Charles allows William to become the monarch only he should get any money until he has an heir.

The royal family pay taxes just like anyone else, Prince Charles paid

The way Red Ken is going it wont be long before any person can afford to enter London with his stealth taxes. This country owe a lot to the Royal family if only for the stability it brings to the nation. Looking at countries run by a President - especially middle eastern and African states all I can say is thank God for the Monarchy.

May be your title gets in the way of clear thought LB.

We have president Brown already.

When some head of state pops in for a shindig they roll out Brown and the old girl at the palace. Heads of state don't need to see the old girl with no clout, they are seeing Brown anyway, he's head of state. Why should any one else be needed.

Royals paying tax is a joke, they pay a knock down paltry ammount, if you and I get screwed for tax'x so sould they. Recently MP's were actually looking in to the illegal way land is transfered between Royals such as the likes of the Air Miles Andy case. But no doubt someone will bury that with some cover up.

LB as for "If the Queen abdicates and Charles allows William to become the monarch only he should get any money until he has an heir"

It's sweet FA to do with Charles, it's our country and we pay him, her and his kids and we should be calling the shots or calling the French for a sharp bladed implement, not letting the queen or Charles decide who is inflicted upon us.

C'mon Jason, you're still pontificating yet still haven't given me an alternative. You say ..."Recently MP's were actually looking in to the illegal way land is transfered between Royals"....

and you would trust these people to get it right would you? The very people who just in recent weeks have been caught out paying their sons who are at uni for work they don't do, claiming rent expenses for homes they own, use air miles that they've accumulated at our expense to fly their family around the world, use money from the public purse to pay for their own lawyers, claims expenses for a quad bike they own and husband/wife claiming two lots of expenses for one home.

Oh, and one of them, the Speaker, is the very person who is charged with overseeing MPs expenses, now you are talking about a joke.

Give me your idea of Utopia please Jason because all I've seen you do is complain and I don't just mean this thread :O)

If I could guess you would be childless, living on a derert island with just your wife and caravan and have the title of President. There you would be able to vent your anger and frustration at life until you were at peace with yourself.... hehheh!

We don't need and alternative as I have said LB

We have elections and get a leader/head of state that way already.

At the moment he is called Brown.

Utopia is not something I'm looking for LB. Accountability is more like it, MP's and people in public service should be open to more scrutiny from the public and Royalty should be our choice by voting.

I think we have quite a nice life LB, and have no idea where you get that I'm angry . I wouldn't trade my kids for anything, but in hindsight we would not have had them.

We've booked a holiday final decider trip to New Zealand, I'm not looking for utopia but we felt more at home there than we do on many a street here.

and that's how you do it LB
