Alko 2000 stabiliser hitch

Hi I hope someone can tell me where I am going wrong! I recently bought a 1999 Avondale Mayfly with the aforesaid hitch and the first time we went away - last Tuesday - the hitch was so stiff that we coiuldn't manage to close it down properly after attaching the caravan to the car. The dealer did warn us that it required a fair amount of "wallop" to close it properly. Problem is A) Is it just than neither myself (fit active 64 years) not my better half (78 pushing 79)) have enough wallop available or B) There might be something wrong with the mechanism? Any advice or comments would be welcome
