I have a 2003 Abbey Aventura 320 and the hand brake would not remain in the upright secured position. It was repaired using two washers either side of the fixing point by a mobile caravan technician. All was well for a couple of months then the brakes started binding thus causing a problem when using the motor mover and severe squeaking when mobile. A local service tehnician unseazed the wheels however the first time out this season the problem developed again approx 30 miles into journey, although on this occassion when braking, the van bangs onto the tow hook. I am confused!!

Can anyone help me please. I live in Cheltenham and am reluctant to use a dealer if this can be sorted on site. Thank you in advance.

John, you do not say if the handbrake is a ratchet type or gas strut.

If it is a ratchet type then it is most likely the ratchet has become damaged and needs replacing, two washers will not cure such a problem.

As for the van banging against the towball when braking, this is almost certainly the hitch damper is defective and needs replacing as a matter of urgency.

To test the damper, push it in towards the van as hard as you can, it should be very difficult to move, then when you let go, it should slowly move outwards to the resting position.

If it stays where you put it, it is useless and constitutes a danger if towing as the van will try and catch up with the car and apply the brakes, even when you do not want them to be applied.

Sounds as though there is a lot more amiss with the brakes than just one simple problem. I'd therefore advise you to have the whole braking system including the dampers checked thoroughly before moving the caravan.
