Alloy Wheel Query!

Hi all.
Just a couple of questions.
Can car alloy wheels of the right PCD etc.Be used on a cara van.Or are caravan wheels in alloy beefier?
My existing steel wheels are 5Jx13 PCD 100 4 stud H2 ET30.If i wanted to change to 14" wheels, allowing for clearence and they being 4 stud.Would they fit?
I did hear the PCD on 14" is 112 PCD,would this rule upgrading out?
Many thanks
Pierre.

In answer to your last question the answe is a NO. I’d stick with steel they don’t seem so sensitive to torque and tend to stay attached better to the caravan.

You might check another model from your caravan maker that has a similar MTPLM, perhaps a later year and pick up some wheels from a caravan breaker.

You will have to check not just the PCD but also the offset and whether you would have tyre clearance at full deflection of the suspension

Crikey!! Obviously i dont want them coming undone..lol

Sounds like changing could be a minefield of probables..lol

Hello again LG

I know I pointed you to the Quote button, but you may well have seen that most of use teh Quote first and then add our comment afterwards, its just a more logical approach, but its you choice which way to do it.

I am at a complete loss as to why caravans have alloy wheels at all .... apart that is from 'Bling' ? The usual claimed reason reason on a car is that it improves acceleration, but that is hardly a significant factor with a towed caravan. I suppose there is some weight saving which helps with MIRO .... but then why is the spare, if fitted, nearly always steel.

I have noted that very few 'vans elsewhere in Europe have Alloys. Perhaps someone can enlighten me?

Whilst auto alloys will reduce the cars overall weight the difference isn’t that great that it affects acceleration by other than a small amount, or fuel economy either. But every little helps. The most gain is from the reduction in unsprung weight and its effects on suspension and handling.

You would have to check on all teh dimensions, as understand that caravan wheels tend to have a different flange offset . But also the majority caravan wheels actually end up carrying more load than most car wheels do, so their load capacity is likely to be bigger than a saloon cars.

.........I could almost guarantee that you would have wheel arch clearance problems if you tried to fit 14 inch wheel rims to a caravan designed for 13 inch rims.

Some caravans develop clearance problems even with their correct size wheels fitted!

Still possible though . I think that alloys give the caravans a nice finish

Guess that you have experienced the Alko axle relaxation problem?

Not me otherclive......... still running on 13 inch steels on an old Swift.
They have travelled 88400 miles on the caravan so no complaints.

The big issue with them is that suitable tyres to fit 13 inch rims are very difficult to obtain in Europe should you have a problem.

Thats was my line of thought too..lol

As it would be a modification to the caravan, the insurers need to be notified and maybe the NCC who will need to issue a new Certificate of Conformity to allow it to be towed on the road?

Why not go for some fancy wheel trims

That might be my best bet and the least grief route..lol
I might keep my eyes open for a 13" set of alloy wheels that has the right offset pcd etc.
Many thanks for the info, nothing seems simple these days lol.

As the Prof mentioned about loading, you would need to know the donor car, so you could check the load index of the tyres intended to be fitted to the car would be at least as high as the load index on your caravan tyres.
