Another Newbie problem - Water hog or direct water supply?

Hi Me again - Just wanted to know - As we don't have any form of water connection yet which is best? I'd prefer to connect a hose directly from a standpipe to the caravan but would need to buy some sort of direct connector to replace the pump thing that seems to drop into a water container.

What do other caravanners use/prefer?

All advice for a complete novice very welcome!!!!!!!

You do need a water container, we have an Aquaroll. You can only connect directly to a tap if you have a serviced pitch with your own tap.

On such a pitch we use an Aquaroll mains kit, basically a ball valve type thing that screws into the side entry. You connect this to the tap with food hose and suitable fittings. This keeps the Aquaroll topped up. You then use your drop in pump as usual.

You can connect direct with a suitable pressure reducer, but we feel the Aquaroll method is safer.

The normal method of connecting the water to your caravan is via an aquaroll. The 'pump thing' is in fact your pump which lifts water from the aquaroll to your caravan water system.

There is a method of direct connection from a tap to your aquaroll but to utilise this you need to be on a fully serviced pitch with it's own tap.

Not every site has fully serviced pitches which cost extra anyway.

Jennifer,

You say you can connect direct with a suitable pressure reducer, but feel the aquaroll method is safer.

I use the direct feed from the tap to the caravan which I purchased from my local dealer. It has the same end as the pump which connect's to the van.

Couple of questions if you can help.

1.Is this why when on mains the pressure in the van is slower than when I use the aquaroll?

2.Why do you feel its safer with your ball valve type thing?

The reason for slower supply using the mains adaptor is the pressure reducer.

It is safer to use the aquaroll and ball valve method as if the pressure reducer fails, and they have been known to fail, you get mains pressure water in the system, which blows apart most of the joints as well as putting too much pressure into the water heater and taps, which in turn means a very expensive repair bill.

Using the aquaroll method eliminates ths situation, an deven if the ball valve fails, the mains pressure remains outside the van water system.

You may well get postings saying people have used mains adaptors for a long time with no problems, all I can say is I have had to repair 4 vans which the system has failed on.

Oh well off to the local dealer tomorrow (more expense but probably cheaper in the long run)

There are two other advantage of the Aquaroll method,

1 On some sites the mains water pressure varies quite a lot depending on how many taps are being used. If you are at the end of the line with a direct connection, you can loose pressure and flow. with the Aquaroll these dips in pressure will not be noticed as teh container acts as a local reservoir.

Secondly you have a system that can be used on a normal pitch if no direct mains supply is available. You just send the children off in the morning to fill the AR from the nearest tap. Just as easy really.

The system with the pressure reducer, such as Whale Watermaster, can also be used to fill an onboard tank, if fitted. This not only does away with the possible issue of mains pressure in the van, but you don't have to carry the AR either.

My daughter who is two manages to get the empty aquaroll to the tap, but struggles to get the full one back to the caravan ! i have experimented with different footwear on her for better traction but to no avail, Any advice?

Pitch downhill from standpipe, but remember to catch her as she comes by!!!!
