Any builders/carpenters out there

We have a problem with the stairs, had it ever since we bought house.

the creaks drive us mad, I mean neam just one, every tread creaks. Our stairs only have one wall to them.

Let me see if I can explain how they are built, On the wall side between every riser and tread there is a long thin piece of wood about 5-6" long that is on both on the riser and tread of the stringer. Three large triangular pieces of wood attached to riser and tread in a row in the centre. Hall side of stairs there is a stringer same as other side and thats it.
Also now at the top of the stairs we can move the newel post and boy does the wood move away with the stringer on the hall side.
But more to come, at the top of the stairs there is the joist which the first riser is attached to, yes? no there is a 1" gap when I watched someone go and down I was horrified how far the tread sank.

Clearly we can see this as the plasterboard is down mainly because we were fed up off it working loose on the hall side of the stairs.
As I ask is there any builders/carpenters out there that have any solutions which might help..

thanks
