Paul,

Couple of wee questions, why the A84 where are you heading if its the highlands then the A9 is a better road for towing.

Secondly depending on when you are going the M74 is under re-contruction for the next 6 - 7 weeks and its got a regular 2 hour delay. I would check the web for data on traffic problems.

This might change your arrival time which might affect the choices for stop over.

You might want to think about the club sites at Moffat in the borders, its the normal stop over for hundreds every year whether they are going north or south.

Depending on where in the highlands you are looking to get to you might need another one night stop. That way you can take in the scenery without being pushed into long hauling in short time frames.

Hi paul we are going to the highlands in may if you are in the c/club try a certificated location for your stop over and as coolcamper55 said I would use the A9 all the truck drivers at work have said it's a better road for towing hope this helps peter.

Hi, and thanks for your comments and advice .

Im off to fort William. Been there a couple of times and usually come up M74 then across up M9 and then A84 but would happierly take suggestions on alternatives as it is quite tight with lots of sharpe corners !

We tend to travel through the night ( as i work nights alot ) to miss the traffic and the kids miss most of the journey !.

I tend to get tired around the 04:00 to 05:00 so usually stop around that time. Its about this time Im around the M9/A84 junction have stopped at the services there last year and it was horrible !! hence looking for alternative

Based on where you are trying to get to then your route is about as good as you get. Its obvious you are not too chuffed with the A82 up the side of Loch Lomond, great scenery and a leisurely drive until you meet the bus coming back from Crianlarich on the wrong side of the road on a blind bend.

Pity that really as there are some cracking sites along the road. Plenty of lay bys too on the A82 where you could pull over for a kip and then maybe take a breather.

Joking aside I have hauled my van up the A82 about ten times last year and find that if you take it easy and steady and are comfortable then its OK. Its 27 feet so most things go round the loch.

You can get from the southside of Glasgow on the M74 to the Erskine bridge in about 40 minutes. Another 20 minutes you can be in Luss and close to the large lay by's on the start of the A82. There is a club site at Luss which might let you stop over in the Late Arrival area.

If you decide in the morning not to take the A82 then its quite a short detour to go back through Balloch and on towards Callendar and back to your original route.

Try Gart, just outside Callander
