Any twitchers out there?

We've just returned from the River Breamish CC site in Northumberland (if you haven't been there, it's wonderful) and, as we were driving back to the site at dusk, a pair of enormous owls skimmed the hedges and flew past the car. They were darker and far bigger than barn owls and the only alternative I can think of would be would be eagle owls.

Do any bird experts have any views? Thanks in advance.

Ron, it more than likely was a pair of Eagle Owls.

Whilst numbers in the UK are small at the moment, there are several successfully breeding pairs in the North and North East of England
