Hello, we are thinking of venturing abroad next year for the first time, been looking through the books and it looks like Switzerland, Lazy Rancho, breaking the journey at a Castile site, La Forge on the way there and back, we wonder what the approx cost per night would be, going last week in July, first in August, we are two adults and a 12 yr old, as we are only used to CC sites we are not sure if extra is charged for awnings, hook up, etc, we have tried pricing it up on the internet and it seems to be about £35-£40 a night, does that sound right ? It seems a lot to us. Thank you for any advice

In France you usually pay a set fee for a pitch, which includes car, caravan, awning, and two people. You pay extra for any 'extra' people (often including infants, particularly in high season), and extra for electricity. You generally don't pay extra for an awning, and you can often put up a pup tent for the children without being charged any extra (although, as said, you'll pay extra for the children themselves).

Your prices sound about right, for high season. One thing to remember is that prices often drop significantly after the second/third week in August, as this is considered to be 'low season' in France - so if you're not fixed to July/August perhaps you could keep costs down by going a bit later.

Get the Caravan Club Europe handbook and you will get some idea of the site charges. some of them - I think Lazy Rancho - are on the CC website so you can also check them there.

If going to switzerland remember to factor in the cost of the vignettes for using the motorways. You used to need two - one each for car and van - and they were quite expensive.

Check with Swiss Tourist Office in London for current situation.

Just inquired for roughly the same dates.Quoted 8SF per adult,5SF for child under 16,Pitch was 30SF,Electric was 4.50SF.

This adds up to about 55SF which at todays exchange rate of 1.80 to the pound is approx 31pounds.This would seem right as we paid about 27pounds last year, but the exchange rate was 2.0 to the pound.Unless you are going to pay the whole lot up front,or you can tell what the rate will be next august you could be in for an expensive holiday, the way the pound/dollar/euro seems to be going downhill The site is really nice with stunning scenery, and one of the places on the list "you should see before you die" Downside was last year it never stopped raining, as you would have noticed by the euro football pictures on the television. If you decide to go, do not be tempted to save the motorway vignette cash,as the side roads are like scottish highland hills and then some, no fun with an 8 metre 1700Kg van on the back and overall length of 42ft!
