Audi A4

I tow a small van (Sprite Alpine 2) with an Audi A4 Avant 170PS TDI. I get a very strong smell with even minimal reversing, like a burning clutch. Anyone else had similar experience. I am beginning to wonder if the Audi is not the best choice for towing although it is otherwise excellent in all other towing aspects.

I tow with a Skoda Octavia vRS with the same engine and haven't had this problem, though I suppose the gearbox/clutch could be different.

The maximum permissible towload of the A4 Avant 170TDI is 1600kg, so if you are having problems with a very much lighter van, something is wrong somewhere, maybe with the auto-reverse on the caravan, and you need to have it and/or the car checked.
