Audi A6 Estate Deisel

We are reluctantly thinking of changing our 56 plate Shogun LWB, mainly due to the deisel bills nearly killing us.

I quite fancy getting a 1 - 2 y.o. Audi A6 deisel from one of the car supermarkets as they seem a good deal, particularly the 170 with S-Line trim. However, most of the ones on offer at present seem to be manual transmission when I'd prefer auto.

Should I just wait or are the manuals just as good/better? The vast majority of our driving is non-towing.

Any opinions from owners would be very welcome.

The final decision of course is yours. You say that you prefer automatics, so stick out for one. How long are you intending to keep the car? I ask the latter because you'll probably find that the residual value of an automatic is better than a manual in that class of vehicle, so if you're looking to change again in the not too distant future then I would go the automatic route. Leather seats and sat-nav are other "desirables" too. If you're considering an S-Line version, make sure that you have a good long test drive to see if you can live with the harder suspension (if fitted).

The A6 Advant is an excellent tow car. I am on my 4th one now which is by far the best one I have had,
Its a 2.7tdi quattro SE Tiptronic. I test drove an S-line but the suspension was far to hard solo and with the caravan on the back it sat to low for me. My previous one was a 2.0 SE manual it was a good tow car better then a mondeo but the quattro just seems so more secure on the road with the van. There isnt much difference in the MPG either. My 2.0 was averaging 47mpg and 28mpg with the van. The quattro has been remapped for ecconomy and I get 42 solo and 25 towing.Previous was a 1.9tdi SE and 2.5 Sport
Also Ithink the S-line towbar was more expensive then the SE, Not sure why it could have been the trim that has to change for the towbar to hide in. I'm sure you will be please with which ever one you choose

Thanks for those replies, that's given me more to think about as I didn't realise the ride would be affected if I buy an S-Line. I though it just had a sportier trim.
I will hold out for an auto box and it would be nice to get a bigger engine but most of the good deals I've seen are on the 2 litre, so I'll probably make do with that.
