After a year with our caravan and getting away a lot , loving every moment, we are starting to feel braver and are thinking about going abroad with the van in the summer, I fancy France , Brittany appeals, but my wife wants to go to Austria or Switzerland. Can anyone tell us the plus or minus points for these choices for first timers ? We are quiet adventuras , so just taking the easy option because it is easy does not appeal to us. Thank you for any advice.

I prefer Switzerland to Austria,Why? I dont know really.
Switzerland is easy to drive too for a first time visit.We use a site in the Bernese Oberland called www.lazyranco.ch as it is Central for a large chunk of Switzerland.

we are going to a site near to lake constance in germany.
We intend to take full advantage of its position to venture into switzerland,austria and indeed leitchenstien too.
The area has its own micro climate so we should have good weather,but if worse came to worse our cenral position in europe means we could strike out to warmer pastures,in whichever direction need be.
becides the alps and lakes are wonderfull.

We love Austria and visited there on our first trip abroad. Two areas are particularly wonderful. Around Wolfgangsee and Mondsee. Easy to visit Germany and Bertchesgarden and Salzburg. The other area only further away are the Southern Lakes near to Villach. Easy to visit Italy and Slovenia for the day. Of course Vienna is lovely too.
We have been put off to going to Switzerland as it is expensive even the road tolls are very high. Austria is a lot cheaper road toll is just over 7 euros for 10 days and includes both car and caravan. Diesel Fuel is cheaper than any where in Europe except for Belgium and of course Luxemburg.
You can visit many sites in Austria with ACSI card for 14 euros per night inc many 4 and 5 star sites.
Weather in April/May is very good we have had 30 degrees in early May.

The choice is yours. Get off the ferry, buy a newspaper and look at the weather forecast and then decide.
However, do not spend the whole holiday driving, or it will be no fun at all. If you find a nice spot, even if it was not the destination, then stay a while and enjoy. The best places are those you discover en route. If thw weather is fine, and the surroundings great, then why travel more?
It is a holiday, not a task to grab as many towns as you can.
One thing to bear in mind, the nearer the Atlantic coast and the more likelyhood of rain and clouds. of course Austria and Switzerland can also be cloudy and cool, and are a lot further to drive.

In truth both Austria and Switzerland are well worth a visit. If pushed I think Austria would be more of a favorite, at least they speak German in a dialect I can just about understand!Don't be to influenced about the tolls you will pay just accept it as part of the holiday cost. You will spend more in tolls going from Calais to the South of France than you will in Austria and Switzerland put together!

we went interlarken in switzerland last year and fully enjoyed it we also went down to lake coma for a few days, I thought switzerland was quite cheap fuel was cheap and the supermarkets weren't to bad either
But then you do not need to use switz motorways for that matter,if you can dodge round the extra tolls in austria, then the same applies to switzerland.
But to go to austria and not take the scenic route for grossglockner,is to miss something special of austria....
Went to Lazy Rancho last year,very good site can't fault it.One plus point is that the swiss franc against the pound is a lot better value than the euro is at the moment. France & Spain this year are going to be expensive, compared with last year,as we got 1.46 euros to the pound, at the moment it is 1.24,which ia BIG difference.

Short ferry crossings are so much cheaper,so assuming you go to brittany,using this method the mileage is not so different,add a few tolls and fuel ect..
If you use the dearer crossings so to save mileage ect,then you pay a few hundred quid more,so again not much diference between them. certainly not enough to make your choice of where to go.

After all the gorgeous free chocolate we got from the Switzerland stand at the NEC on Sunday , made our mind up, Switzerland it is , we are so easily brought !

Well unless something happens soon and the pounds gains in strength, Switzerland would be dear.
Since last summer the pound has crashed not only against the Euro,but the switz france too!
