Does anyone know if the vignettes are for sale before you enter Austria and where and do you also have to pay motorway charges as well

Cheers

The vignettes are ONLY for motorways. If you don't plan to use Austrian motorways, you don't need a vignette. Additional charges are only incurred on a few mountain passes and tunnels. You can buy vignettes at the border or at most offices of various automobile clubs on the way. The charge is 7.70 Euros for 10 days or 22.20 Euros for two months. Unlike Switzerland, you don't need a separate vignette for the caravan, too.

Be also aware that Austria and some of its neighbours are getting tough on speeding, and not just the yo yo's doing 180 kph. A friend was 'done' at the border between Austria and Hungary for doing 80 kph in the 60 kph zone at the border. Cost him 20 euros.

Could be the traffic cops are collecting for Xmas?
