Automatic tow cars

I have a Kia Sorento manual and think it is brilliant. I tow a Bessacarr Cameo.I need to change to an automatic tow car for health reasons and want to buy a Sorento deisel auto. Has anyone had experience of this vehicle? I hear horror stories about auto tow cars.

Don't be put off - automatic gearboxes can be excellent, effortless towers. Golden rule (as always!) is going to be make sure the car/caravan match is good. Need to be particularly clear that the van weight is well within design spec of the cars capacity. However, all the big 4x4's (inc the Sorrento) are well up to pulling a heavy van, and the gearboxes are set up to deal with this workload without any additional modifications. I tow a big van with a Shogun Auto and can't fault the gearboxes performance. Good luck! Richard

Don't believe them! There will always be someone who is able to paint a black picture. I towed for years with automatics and they were just great. I don't have a preference between manual or autos. This is born out by the fact that I've recently gone back to a manual car.

Paul, I tow a twin axle Bailey Senator with either a BMW 530D Sport Auto or if visiting rough off tarmac sites a 2.5 DSE Range Rover Auto. Both vehicles tow brilliantly the BMW is more economical when towing with an MPG around 25 and bags of power whilst the Range Rover returns around 21. Both cars have Sport gera selectors and manual override which is useful when approaching inclines to keep the revs up. For info,

when I was looking to buy a towcar, I was told that some Auto Diesels might require an oil cooler fitted so worth asking your Kia garage if Auto Sorrento is ok without.
