Awning Carpet Underlay

Hi All
Do any of you use an underlay with your awning carpet on hard standings? I have got a Bolon type awning carpet which is great on grass pitches, but is starting to look a bit shabby due to being used a lot on hard standings.
I am wondering if any of you use an underlay of some kind to protect the carpet from the sharp gravel found on most hard standings. I am thinking of getting a cheap tarpaulin to put under it. And was wondering what other people do?

Cheap tarp and then foam tiles from Aldi in the half most used or if porch awing in all, then normal awning carpet on top. If I was to stay more than a couple of weeks I think I would get a old heavy duty tilt off a haulier and put that down first. I have a footprint made from an old tilt for my tent and that works really well and also helps to insulate.
