Awning Damage

Just back from a BAD weekend. Both awning and caravan damaged due to gusting wind lifting the awning and blowning it over the top of the caravan. Two other awnings were damaged on the site.

Caravan was on hard standing with steel rock pegs being used to secure the awning.

Storm strap fitted but appears to have unhooked itself as the long spikes were still in the ground.

This was a brand new caravan and awning (unfortunately). The awning has a glassfibre frame unlike our last awning which had steel poles. We have been caravanning for over 7 years and have never experienced damage before and therefor thought we were doing everything right.

Some of the glassfibre poles have snapped obviously due to excessive and violent flexing allowing the stormstrap to simply detach from the ground spike. At this point the awning has taken off over the caravan roof. The storm strap was attached to its ground spike using the D rings supplied, however, had i not used the D rings and tied the strap to the spike then this would not have happened.Hindsight is a great thing!

Now for my question (at last)!

Has anyone else found that fibre frame awning are easily damaged?

Any tips for pegging and securing awnings would be gratefully received.

I dont blame the awning or the storm strap the blame MUST lie with me.....but i hope to avoid the same thing happening again.

It does not help you now but when we got our Awning, our dealer stronly suggested that we forget the glassfibre poles as he had seen several vans and awnings damaged in this way. The Steel poles are harder to lift.

Did you pre-rension the storm straps? They should be very hard to release if they are tensioned correctly.

I hope you get it sorted soon

Steve
