Good evening,
I bought a elddis crown caravan a few months ago, i was looking for a porch awning but was told by a dealer that one wouldnt fit because the roof of the caravan slopes over the door,
I have thought of using a driveaway awning instead, has anybody done this before and does it sound a viable option.
thanks in advance.

Hi. Welcome to the forum. I had a look at the internet and the pictures I saw of an Elddis crown showed a sort of initial slope ( looked like a peak over the door) over the door and a bit further on, the roof sloped significantly over the window. I wondered if a porch awning which is based on a curved pole or air pole at the front of the awning ( like the vango air rapide) would actually tolerate the initial slope? I may be looking at the wrong van of course. If you can post a picture it may help.
Good luck

Thanks.Nice looking van. I cannot say for certain, so if you can beg or borrow to try before buying, then you should, but I still think an awning of the style like the vango air rapide or the Sunncamp swift, might just cope. Don’t take my word for it though, I don’t want to be responsible for an expensive mistake.
Would be interested in anyone else’s thoughts.

I have used a motorhome driveaway awning (Vango Kela III low) with a Ci Cadet 10 - This had a curved roof line like an arch and was not as tall as modern horizontal roof caravans. It worked well as the kador strip (the piping that runs into the awning rail) is the same and there us a large range of adjustment using webbing straps to take up slack. The only downside is that it will never be a perfect fit, but was better than no awning for that small caravan.

I now have a SunnCamp swift canopy for my new caravan, but am yet to try it out.

I see the problem. As I see it the only way a porch awning could be used is to have it end immediately to the side of the door before the roof becomes too low, even then it might take some adjusting and some might not work.
When these were new there were awnings that did fit, but I do doubt if these are still available so a drive away awning could be the best safe solution although a gazebo might also work but might be less secure in bad weather.
