Assuming that this weather warms up a bit and we will be able to sit in our awning in the evenings - what kind of lighting does anyone use to supplement the over door light? We would like to be able to read - obviously the Practical Caravan magazine!! - but feel that the over door light isn't sufficient. We saw an LED strip light in an accessory shop today - but is there a better alternative?

We have an outside electric point, and have a ceiling lamp fitting on the end of an electric cable. We throw the lamp fitting over the central awning rail, and let it dangle about a foot so it's not near the roof material, put a lampshade on and a bulb in, plug into the outside point - and it's just like being at home!

We have a table lamp that plugs into the outside electric outlet. But my favourite lamp is a beautiful gas lamp in the style of the old oil lamps with globe and chimney. It has a gas mantle and a very pretty globe shade,I inherited it from my mom,she used to have it in her static caravan near Tewkesbury. The light is so soft and warm and OH the memories it brings back!!!! ahhhh !!!

We do the same as Val A. We fix the lamp to the central awing roof pole with cable ties. We also use a special yellow bulb that does not attract insects. I don't know if you can buy them in the UK. Ours came from South of France

As I have only been out once with the van I have not tried the awning out, but next weekend we are venturing off to south Devon for a week and hopefully will be sitting in the evening sun in the awning.

What I would like is an old Tilly lamp but do not know if you can still get them plus are they a health and safety hazard.

Oh well perhaps just candles.

Go into a builders merchants or car maintenance shop and ask for a rechargeable LED worklight - comes with hooks to hang it, does not need a permanent cable feed, is very robust and will not run your van battery flat (2-5 Watts), also useful for nighttime roadside repairs etc.

Ours comes with 2 settings and mains and plug in chargers and cost about

We use a white ropelight, think it came from Aldi when they had xmas decorations in, cable tied all the way round the awning, normally on constant, but can have it flashing if we're feeling festive.
