Awning pegs

Being fairly new to caravanning I assumed that the pegs that came with my awnings (eurovent full and suncamp scenic plus porch) would be suitable for use, considering the cost of the awning that would seem to have been a reasonable assumption.

However on attempting to use the pegs I usually find it goes like this, I arrive on site and get on my trusty 4lb lump hammer from the landrover and start to tap the pegs into the ground, the results of this usually fall into one of the following categories:

1)The pegs go nicely into the ground as you would expect

2)They bend

3)The hit something hard in the ground and bend

4)I try to tap them into the gravel on a hardstanding they refuse and bend

Now as I look around other peoples awnings I see a lot of smart looking pegs, I have even seen people putting pegs in with a battery drill.

That makes me assume that the bent wire pegs I got with my awnings are not fit for the task, I paid just over £600 for the full awning and £100 for the porch, you would think they would supply suitable pegs, not toy ones as they seem to have done.

Assuming I now have to go and buy some better pegs, my question is simple, which pegs do I need to buy and where from (preferably online), sometimes we have been on grass pitches, sometimes gravelled hard standings.

I am not really bothered about taking a battery drill everywhere with me unless this is the only option.

Regards

Mark

Years of tenting and now starting to caravan have taught me that there is no one perfect tent peg.

Whats good for sand is imposible to get into rocky ground etc.

I carry a bag of about 5 different types gathered over the years and giving me a wide range of options. Sometimes a special peg in important positions can mean using bassic ones between is ok.

Any good camping shop will have a selection for you to browse and choose from.

A 4lb club hammer?.......EEKKKKKKKKKKKKK.

Sorry ALWAYS a rubber mallet designed for the job. Much kinder to all types of pegs.

Regardless of the above..enjoy your awnings

I've found Tarzan Rock Pegs are great for all types of ground. I use a wooden mallet to drive them in as it dosn't bounce like a rubber one. You can buy the pegs online for

Hi Mark,

Three main scenarios:

UK or European Campsite - with Grass Pitches

This is the "normal" camp site pitch in Europe - so the pegs supplied with an awning are designed for this type of ground.

The pegs are made from galvanised mild steel rod, and will bend or distort - but you should be able to straighten them.

Caravan Club Hard-standing

Normal pegs don't stand a chance - you should use rock pegs - which are similar to a 10" galvanised nail and a cross piece welded on-top

These will still bend if you hit a large rock, but can be straightened - and we use them on grass too

European Sand (Beach site)

The round pegs will just pull out - so you need a V shaped peg

Screw Pegs

You may see people screwing the awning down - you can buy these special pegs from at least two companies, for around
