Hello All,

Just bought our first awning (second hand Dorema) and wondered about pegs. I was going to go for steel pegs and a mallet, but have seen these new screw in types for hardstanding and grass.

Any recommendations????

Hi Richard

Spend a little more now and long term make your life easy.

I use 8" screwpegs which work well in most terrains ie grass to very hard standings, NOT concrete!

I now hammer them in and use my cordless drill to unscrew. Never let me down even in high winds. You try and pull an 8" peg out of hard ground . Very tough on the back.

Cheers

Hi Alan,

We thought about screwpegs but, after looking into it, decided that the metal screwpegs wouldn't offer much grip over a normal peg on soft ground, and would require a pilot hole to be drilled on compacted hardstandings!

So, anyway, for the cost we decided that they would be more trouble than they were worth! (although I know a lot of people swear by them)

In the end we went for a set of 9" Tarzan pegs and a big hammer!

Hi Rupert,

No need to drill pilot holes on compacted ground. Just hammer the screwpegs in with a hammer! Easy.

How easy is it to remove the Tarzans ?

I do carry a selection of different pegs and hate having to struggle pulling them out of the ground. I guess if they pulled out easily they wouldn't be doing the job.

Cheers

Hi Alan,

I've only used them once, on grass, and they came out without any trouble using the claw of a claw hammer.

They held the awning securely, though, in windy conditions.

Hi

I'd go for the screwpegs too - BUT....

You'll need a hefty cordless to put them IN to the ground. As Alan said earlier - better to hammer them in and then use the drill to unscrew them.

They DO hold - we were nearly blown over the Catbells at Easter...but the screwpegs held everything where it should be.

Mind - the storm straps that were attached to the awning were secured with two of those screw-in doggy-tethers (

The one job is really do not like is hammering in the awning pegs when setting up. In the hope it makes things easier I have bought a box of 50, M8 x 150long, coach bolts and a box of 100, 40mm dia washers from Leofixings. They were cheap but i may have wasted my money. Time will tell.
