Awning pole angles

What's the correct angle for putting the end poles from front of the awning to the caravan? My carbonfibre poles have click in connectors that suggest that the poles should be at 90 degrees to the front and horizontal with the ground, but when I look at the brochure, it would seem that they positioned half way round the front and back curve of the van. I tried that and Welsh rain got the better of me and I got a lagoon in the roof. I made sure that all was tight and straigt when it was ereceted.The instructons for my Ventura Atlantic do not seem to help much......

I always put mine at 90 deg to the caravan. As you said this is where they fit comfortably in the front vertical poles. I have noticed the brochures have them well up the side of the van, but my poles do not sit right like this.
