Not being as young and strong as I might like to think I once was, I am thinking of buying one of these.

I have read up on the 'Awning Companion' and the 'Hercules' types - but does anyone have any experience of either?

I had a Hercules for use with my last (NR) awning. I found it easy to use, in fact it was the only way I could keep tension on the poles while I tightened the wing nuts as I only have two hands! I don't use it now as my current awning has the easy alloy system.

Hi, I have the hercules type of pole tensioner. I use it on my Dorema awning which has steel poles. Although I can achieve quite alot more tension in the poles using the hercules, it is probably no easier than using my hands - the tensioner slips on the poles so I tend to use it for the last little tweak once the awning is up. Long and short of it is, it still requires considerable effort to use one.

Hiya i have the awning companion and find it great and easy to use as once on it leaves you with both hands free to lock up wing nuts or whatever means of locking your poles have.

I've had both and the awning companion wins without doubt, but do not get over enthusiastic as it is a very powerful device.

After using the Hercules the awning companion tightens the canvas considerably more.

'Awning Companion' sounds to be a great idea for getting correct tension. Also see that there is an 'Awning Mate' made by the same manufacturer, which is a few pounds cheaper. It only has one clamp on instead of two, but is it as effective as the 'Awning Companion'.
