Bailey Barcelona Towcar

Hi there,

I am currently towing my Barcelona with a Jeep 2.7 CRD. Due to the day to day running costs of the Jeep (not cheap at all), I am looking at updating my tow car and have been drawn to the Ford KUGA 2.0 Duratorq (163PS).

The Ford website specifications give the max permissable towing weight of the Kuga at 2100 Kg, the Barcelona weighs in at approx 1750 (laden). (believe this is an 83 % match). However when I look on the CC and What Tow car matching service they put the KUGA down as not an ideal towcar for my van.

Does anyone tow a big twin with a KUGA and how is it as a tow car.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Paul

You're using the wrong figure to work out the Towing Ratio - you need the kerbweight around 1650kg, not the maximum towing weight which relates more to agricultural trailers etc.
At 106% towing ratio your Barcelona is far too big for a Kuga.
Have a look at the Santa Fe or Sorento - their kerbweights are 1800-2000 kg.

Be very careful using the Whattwocar site as it is nto very accurate as there is a difference in weights for some UK & EU cars and caravans by up to 100kg. Our caravan is 40kgs heavier than shown on the website. We almost bought an Antara thinking it could tow our caravan.

The What Tow Car websites does allow you to change the car kerbweight and/or the caravan laden weight if you have more accurate figures to hand.

Very true, but not many people seem to know where to find the information.

If you already own a recent outfit, the caravan MTPLM will be on it's VIN plate and the car's kerbweight is shown as "Mass In Service" on the V5C registration book.
If you don't own the car so using Whattowcar for research it can be tricky to select the correct model variation for the car.

You'll be looking at something heavier than a kuga to tow that! Alas the price we pay for a fairly heavy van is a fairly heavy mpg with the tow car.
